Just Upgraded From 512 - 1gb RAM But No Improvement!

I've just taken out my two sticks of 256mb RAM and replaced them with two sticks of 512mb of RAM but upon booting up the Computer I've not noticed any speed difference or anything like that.

Could this be because the RAM has never been used before and is just storing information on itself?

To notice an improvement when increasing memory, you typically need to have experienced a scenario where an application or multiple applications running simultaneously bogged your machine down with 512MB, and then compare it to the same scenario with the increased amount of RAM. With a single, average application running, the things that will make your computer run faster are a faster processor, with a larger cache and/or a hard drive with faster access time.

Try using a photo editor program (Photoshop, etc.). Open about 20 photos. With your new memory it should still perform pretty well. With the 512 it would probably crawl (my sister's computer did just that).

    Try gaming. :)

Also, are they running 128 bit (Dual Channel mode)?

Try opening up a lot of Netscape windows and see how you can have many windows open without the PC getting bogged down.

Excellent find! Though, I did read it when it came out. But, one tends to forget articles one read a long while back.

This is a new one. I have never heard of that before. Sorry, but you set yourself up on that one.

Speed has to do with not only the CPU in the machine, but the hard drive, network connection, and what else is running in the background. It can be a little as programs taking forever to load (try clearing temp. files, and Defragging the drive), to as much as bottlenecking caused by a poorly performing machine, which RAM will never change.

As mentioned, you'll only notice performance increases with resource hungry programs like games and CAD/graphics type stuff... Lots of RAM will only increase boot times by a very small (and probably unnoticeable) degree...
