I have a Toshiba Portege 3500. I started having problems a week or 2 ago when I would hiberate or stand by the computer. When I restarted, the cursor control overly / numlock (Fn+F10 / Fn+F11) was toggled on and the left 2/3 of the keyboard was locked. It seemed to me as if the Fn key was 'locked' either on or off. I rebooted and the problem would go away.

Now whatever is doing this is striking seemingly randomly, toggling the cursor control overlay / numlock on and locking the left section of my keyboard. I've noted that I can use my Tablet PC Input Panel (pop-up virtual keyboard) to type the locked characters, but I cannot use it to toggle the cc overlay / numlock. This whatever also mutes my volume, and it happens regardless of which application I am using or whether I am connected to the internet. I did 2 system restores, the 2nd of which I am certain was created before I started having problems, to no avail.

I followed the standard cleaning procedure prior to running a HJT scan. When I enter the start up options menu (to start up in safe mode) and move through the menu using arrow keys, at first everything seems fine. Then it sometimes strikes again, toggling my cc/numlock and disabling part of my keyboard, BEFORE even booting up. Once booted into safe mode, the cc overlay is always on and the left part of my keyboard always disabled. In the process I also discovered I am locked out of the system administrator account. I never put a password on this account, but now I am prompted for one. When I login through my normal account (which has admin rights), I can seemingly change or remove the admininstrator password, but on reboot I am prompted again and cannot access it with the password I am setting. Incidentally when running in safe mode, I cannot switch user. Also if I change the admin password and logout, I cannot enter ANY passwords on the login screen, forcing me to reboot again with the same situation resulting.

I've searched various forums but mostly turned up problems with using the numlock. Something has changed and I just don't see what's going on. Attached are the requested logs. Any ideas?

    Thanks for your help,
    ASnuffy

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Problems like you are mentioning are rarely related to malware. They are more frequently caused by hardware or software/driver issues which really appears to be your case too. Your logs do not indicated any malware problems.

I will give you one suggestion to try and see if it changes anything, and other than this I will have to say you will need to try posting in the Hardware Forum.

As a test, run MSconfig and disable the below startups from loading:
    Code:
    [THKem] C:\WINDOWS\System32\THKem.exe
    [000StTHK] 000StTHK.exe
    [Apoint] C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe
    [TFNF5] TFNF5.exe
    [TouchED] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TouchED\TouchED.Exe
    [TosHKCW.exe] TosHKCW.exe
    [TosRotation] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Rotation Utility\TRot.exe
The name in brackets is what you should see on the MSconfig Startup tab in the Startup Item column.

Thanks for the suggestion. Like you suspected, it didn't change anything. The problem has been very sporadic lately. I didn't have any "strikes" for the last few days, but today it's been acting up again. I've been playing around with Toshiba accessibility / Fn-StickyKey and notice that I can sometimes unlock the left side of the keyboard by switching it on & off (of course then the right side is locked in cc/numlock mode). Today I actually got the whole board working by doing this!

Anyway, thanks for taking a look. I'll try the Hardware Forum if it keeps acting up.

    Peace,
    ASnuffy
