Killed the malware manually, now .exe files won't

I had a malware infection of the XP Guardian 2010 rogue; and I followed a manual removal procedure that involved deleting a few registry keys as well as the two other files (ax.exe and WRblt8464P).

I could not find the av.exe or the other file anywhere on the hard drive; but I did delete the specified registry keys. I ran out of time last night; but on booting up tonight, it appears as though the malware is gone (or at least inactive). The problem is, however, that the PC seems unable to run any .exe file. I get an error message that there is no file association for the .exe file.

This error is common to any .exe files from MSWord to regedit.

Now, I'm pretty darned sure I didn't mess up the registry; I only deleted the specified keys associated with the av.exe malware execution.

Did I screw it up? Did the malware compromise the registry without my help? Most importantly, how can I get my .exe functionality back?

    TIA.

At the linked page, the EXE repair file was the ninth file, not the seventh; but it does appear to have done the job. Thanks a bunch.

    LOL....mind like swiss cheese. Sorry.

I do suggest that you continue on and do the Read and Run First so that we can check your logs for any leftover traces of malware.
