LAN connected but cannot surf

Hi

I am facing this problem on a laptop now. When I plugged in the LAN cable, the icon says connected, but I cannot surf the net at all. Tried winsockfix, but didnt work.

One thing to note though, is that when Internet Explorer 7 is trying to open the page, eg. Yahoo.com, the IP below shows 1.0.0.0

The laptop cannot connect and surf wirelessly though. Just need to solve this LAN problem before returning it.

Sorry, forgot to add this on. Whenever the LAN cable is connected, the whole Laptop will slow down, or even hang. When I pull the cable out, everything resumes to normal.
