Laptop runs really slow

My daughter has brought me her Laptop because it is running really slow. We bought it for her a few years ago just for school work. It is a Dell Inspiron 1000. It is running Windows XP. From what I can see it is on SP2. It really does run slow. I ran a cleanup disk on it and it took 2 hours. Normal boot up takes 5 to 10 minutes. Any ideas on how to help?? Thanks.

Have you done a defrag yet try it see if it makes any difference
accessories/ system tools / defragment

There are a lot of reasons systems run slow, from having a lot of startup items to malware.
You could first try using one of these:

Startup Manager

Startup_CPL

Another thing can be the ant-virus software ( most "suites"are bloated and hog needed resources).

You have to give us a lot more information.

Check if any Anti-Spyware Products have been installed then check this list as some of these can really slow a machine.

Also give CCleaner a run.
