Laptop, Screen Shot Can I Just Break It Off?

Okay, my laptop screen is completely black, no lights no nothing. I finally got a secondary screen to work in regular mode by deleting and deleting and deleting again all the AMD and Radeon software and drives (the uninstall utility did not work until I deleted the directories and lots of other stuff..., uninstall uitility and removing the drive and hardware and every time it was back again till I deleted tons of files, hope I didn't delete too much). Now a secondary screen works great on basic drivers.

Issue, since the laptop screen is just a nuisance, how can I get rid of it and just work with the secondary screen? Can I just break it off? I don't want it in the way. I'm giving this laptop to my inlaws to replace their old Vista machine... anything is better. This is a HP DV7T-4100 Special Edition laptop radeon HD 5650, Windows 7, intel colre i7-740qm quad core processor, 640gb 7200rpm hard drive.... Sadly it's just been a huge headache for everyone who I know owns one. Runs extremely hot.

    So how to remove screen?
Also is there any way to make laptop not run so hot? The fan is already set to always on (HP's great fix which still had unsafe temps but by the time they supposedly fixed it, my warranty was over.

My plan is to download windows 10 for them. Anything else I should do other than back up my stuff?

Also Im replacing my laptop... got a prior response by one person. Basically no run Quick Books, Turbo Tax, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, lots of photo editing, I do taxes for seniors and charities so security is necesarry.

    Thanks for always being there.
    Have a Great New Year!

Go to the manufacturer's support site and get the Service Manual. It will tell you how to remove the laptop's display. On my Dells, it involves lifting the center hinge cover and disconnecting the flex cable from the graphics card AFTER removing the two hinge screws on the corners of the base plate. The wi-fi antenna (if one) runs up the back of the display so, that will need to be disconnected as well. Of course, you'll lose wi-fi.

Not if he cracks open the display and carefully detaches the antenna. He can then tape it to the case or go to his local hardware store and purchase rigid plastic tubing, insert the antenna inside and glue that to the case if taping it down adversely affects WiFi reception.

You could enable the second monitor through windows, a 'special' key or Radeon (now toast) software, I would think.
If the backlight burnt out, and the screen still gets signal there will be a VERY, VERY faint image on your screen at boot. Like the HP logo or whatever came up normally. Using a flashlight helps. If so, you could save it.
Replacing the backlight can be a bit of a pain on some laptops, but worth it.
For the heat you could try lowering the CPU performance in Windows power settings or just run Linux. It's cool :)
    And, yeah, save that antenna!

thanks guys.. I didn't realize there was an antenna so you saved me!
how do you lower CPU performance?

I have no issues on 2nd monitor. I see nothing at all on the laptop monitor, not even faint in background. Its completely dead! Without uninstalling Radeon and AMD, the 2nd monitor only worked in safe mode. Not sure why that was but deleting AMD and Radeon software, I guess goes back to basic drivers... I tried everything and it was all that worked.

    Happy New Year everyone!

Go to Control Panel -> Power Options and click on change settings. Then click on Change Advanced Power Settings. Scroll down to Processor power management and expand it by clicking on the plus sign. Then expand Maximum processor state and change the values to whatever you want by clicking on the values displayed. See att'd.

Firstly, you need to blow the dust out of the cooling assembly; but, doing that is not as obvious as you might think. With it on, find the exhaust vent(s) where warm air is blowing out of the laptop. Then, with it turned off, use a can of blow-off to blow in through those vents. Be thorough and move back and forth to get the entire vent area(s). All of the dust builds up on the backside of the radiation fins where you can't see it and I have literally had laptops start running 80+ degrees cooler after doing this.
Second; though, is that I'm afraid you have already fried the ATI video chip which is why it works if you uninstall their drivers. DO NOT attempt a Windows 10 installation unless you get that fixed! You won't be happy with what happens.
Thirdly, DV7T-4100 is way too generic; its like saying Ford Taurus. On the sticker with the HP serial number is the part number (often P/N) which almost always ends in #ABA. Go to http://support.hp.com , type that P/N without the #ABA, and then the link to your model's support page. Bookmark it or add it to your favorites! From that page, you can get the real spec's, the service manuals, all of the drivers and updates, etc.
Using the service manual, you may want to try reseating the cable for the display; I have had it fix several laptops recently.
Otherwise; post back the real model number or the P/N so we can help you correctly, OK?

My power options minimum is 5% and maximum are 100% already. Fan is always on. Any suggestions on changes to that?

The laptop is an DV7t-4100 Entertainment notebook. Product ID: 00359-OEM-8992687-00010
    Windows 7 Home Premium, service Pack 1, Intel core I7 CPU Q740 @ 1.73ghz 8gb ram
    64 bit operating system...

I clean the vents with spray monthly... it's ran hot from the day I got it and called HP who did nothing and said it was normal even after it was sent back...note that every person who has used it questions how hot it runs. Only thing HP support ever provided was a new chord which by the way expanded and got hot and got replaced with another new chord that is smaller and I don't think correct for the laptop and also runs hot but the thing HP provided when the replacement chord was worst than the original.

I've done every HP update there has been.

Look on page 20 of this. What I wanted was the Product: XXXXXX#XXX which is what HP uses to identify all of the components; but, regardless, here is your service manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02666747
Maybe, the correct support page: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product...ment-Notebook-PC-series/4247665/model/4317241
And, FYI, numerous people complained about defective cooling assemblies.
If you want to view its actual temps, get a copy of the last freeware version of Gabriel Topala's SIW and look at the sensors section under hardware: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/siw_portable
CPU temps up to about 95c are OK if you are stressing the heck out of it; but, over 70 while idling is a red flag. The GPU ought to be cooler than that.

Hence why I won't buy another HP... lots of complaints and no recall on a defective cooling assembly is a bit critical.

I honestly need to get a new laptop quickly. This one is nothing but a headache. I also need a new printer as the HP C7280 is also garbage, with the software to the network keeps losing it. Constantly updating, reinstalling. Another lovely piece of garbage from HP that their tech support didn't properly support telling me I needed a new printer 3 days after warranty expired while I started help from them prior to warranty expiration.... I keep getting it to work on my own without HP support but I think my laptop is so bad it's just time to replace everything. I print up to 100 pages back and front quite often. Would prefer only 2 ink cartridges as cost is a factor and while I do pictures, I get them professionally printed when needed but print photos regularly at okay quality at home.

Any suggestions on a new laptop or printer?

Basically we use laptop for doing accounting and taxes for local and small charities (yes for free). So I need portable (this one is so damn heavy and awful battery life). I do loads of picture and video editing. I use turbotax and quickbooks, word, excel, powerpoint mainly. I know the surfacepro and apple don't work well with turbotax and I use that a lot so no more headaches wanted. My sons were using this one for gaming but I booted them off so that's not needed. I don't want to once again be buying another laptop in 4 years. I'm willing to finance the cost now for less headaches.

    Thanks again.

If you need tax help, post away....

If you want a network printer to work reliably, always use a wire! Wireless just has too many ways to get gescrewdefay.
Good deals on laptops are a local thing most of the time and I can usually find one for $4-500 that is $200+ off list. If you want to shop yourself, you need to get the actual CPU part number which usually means searching the model number separately, these days, and then look it up at http://www.passmark.com.
    Two examples:
    https://cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-4005U+@+1.70GHz&id=2193
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-5020U+@+2.20GHz&id=2597
I will not recommend a product where the single thread rating is below 1000, these days. I also try to avoid AMD CPU's in laptops and won't buy anything made by ASUS.
    Check this guy ($319): http://www.walmart.com/ip/47089095?...3105792&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=149612638832&veh=sem

thanks, will take a look at what you posted.

It is a wired network and it still drops constantly. Sometimes I have to find it by IP address and it's in the same room as the router.... sometimes it doesn't show. Before you say check the wire, I replaced it. It doesn't even work directly wired. Scanner doesn't work at all any more. So I've got a printer and a copier for now. I need to scan, at this point I'm just taking a pic with my phone as that's all I've got.

The C5xxx and C7xxx were some of the most troublesome printers I had to deal with; especially with scanning issues. Ironically; though, the recent Officejet Pro series have been some of the best.
