I have a Logitech wireless mouse hooked up to the laptop. It's still working, but generally I have to press pretty hard or press twice quickly for it to respond. This began right after the touchpad quit working. The touchpad info screen says the device is "working properly," but, of course, it isn't. Any ideas? Thanks.

Pressing hard could be due to the mouse button being faulty,I've stripped them down in the past and cleaned all the crap that can build up under the buttons but doing so is up to you.

The double click speed can be easily fixed in control panel, mouse, double click speed.

As for the touchpad they usually have little button above the pad that disables it just make sure it isn't pressed, when you disconnect the mouse does the touchpad work again?

Have you tried updating the touchpad driver for your laptop and updating the driver for your mouse?

On any computer with two input devices, you can switch back and forth at will and Windows will pick up on which one you are using. Often, when a trackpad goes "bad", it is still sending data to Windows even though it may be spurious garbage.
Disable the trackpad in the device manager and I'll bet it starts behaving.

You disabled the trackpad in the device manager?

Confession: I don't know what trackpad is. I did go to Device Manager and got the Dell Touchpad screen to show, but I didn't see the word Trackpad anywhere. Could you please tell me how to do what you advised?

have you checked if your touch pad is enabled on your startup list?
go to windows search type in system configuration and click on the startup tag, dont know what yours will be called but mine is called 'synaptics pointing device driver',hope this helps

On my netbook, I press Fn + F7 to disable the touchpad and get the mouse to perform all the actions. Look over the row of F keys and see which one will turn off the touchpad.

You all can probably tell by my questions that I'm no expert in computering. Despite this, my touchpad is working again--and I don't know why. I tried the last two suggestions. In the startup list, I found the words "pointing device." It had a check in the box. When I went back to my regular screen, I discovered that the touchpad was working once again. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

Do you know how the pointing device got unchecked in the first place?
If it was done using MSConfig, you MUST run MSConfig again and set it back to a normal startup. MSConfig is used as a troubleshooting tool and was never meant to be a permanent startup control utility.
Personally, I use WinPatrol; not only as a proactive defense against unwanted changes to Windows; but, as the friendliest startup control I have found. Right-click on a startup entry and choose disable and your done. If you make a mistake and needed it, right-click again and enable. (http://www.winpatrol.com)
The touchpad/trackpad/pointing utility (they're all the same thing) controls the sensitivity, tap-to-click, scrolling, and several other aspects of how the laptop's pointing device operates. Disabling it as a startup item almost always makes them go crazy!
