LCD Widescreen monitors

Ok so im finnaly thinking about parting with my glorious 19" CRT. Its a little too massive to fit in my dorm room next year. So im looking at 22" widescreen monitors. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16824014139 something along the lines of this. My main question is, say i want to play a game in 1280 x 1024 will i be able to make the monitor display that? i can understand thered be black on the edges but will a normal Widescreen monitor of 1680 x 1050 be able to display a normal sized 1280 x 1024?
