Sorry for the obvious-sounding question, but I have a dead laptop with a good Core 2 Duo 2.6ghz in it which I would like to re-use.

    It's currently slotted in:

    Intel(R) I965PM + ICH8M Chipset LGA775 16X PCI-E Platform Mainboard

Will it fit in a normal desktop LGA 775 motherboard?

The CPU should fit in any desktop board that has a 775 socket.

If possible, check the mfr's specs on the replacement board before reinstalling it to be sure the specific CPU you have is supported. In some cases, an older board may not support the specific CPU or require a BIOS update for the CPU to work properly.

    Hope this helps. :)
