Hi... I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop my wife uses to play games. I've been having IE8 problems as I've indicated on other boards.
As I seem to have been locked out of XP at this point I decided to use my Linux Mint 10 (Julia) to try and boot in and see if I could do any repairs.
However, it appears LM10 is having problems installing.
I am at the gray screen and I keep having little prompts pop up with problems too fast to write down and the cursor keeps freezing.
I was able to partially write down one:
oafiid:gnome notify area appalet - delete or not?
    May not be exactly correct...

Will add more as I can...

I would delete the file and see if the desktop loads.

Are you trying the CD or the DVD?

More on what this error means.

I don't know if this might be related to your experience, but I was having the same error on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. The error "just happened" all by itself, without me making any changes on my system to prompt it! ;-)

Turns out that, somehow, my Tomboy Notes applet was loading itself 2x in the Gnome Notification bar and the second instance was triggering the error. I chose to delete the suggested applet and the error has not reappeared since.

I can't help but wonder if you're not experiencing the same issue, or a very similar one. Just delete the offending applet; if that doesn't fix your issue, reinstall the applet in the Gnome menu.
