For those of us that use the Mozilla Firefox browser (and I HIGHTLY recommend this browser!!), there are features called EXTENSIONS that affect the functionality of the browser. That means that it is chocked full of neat stuff to add to your browser. This area is a place to list the extensions you have installed and a short explanation of what they do (if you remember LOL).

    Here's my list:

    1. Forecastfox - retrieves local forcasts and weather reports, displays them unobtrusively in the lower right status bar.

    2. Stumbleupon - a random browsing utility that takes you to a new site everytime you click on it.

    3. Answer This - Alt+Click on any word or term for quick info (definitions, up-to-the-minute reference, and more).

    4. Fasterfox - Performance and netowrk tweaks for Firefox.

    5. Aardvark - Allows cleaning up a page prior to printing it. Also has page analysis tool for web developers.

    6. GooglePreview - Inserts web site previews in google and yahoo search results

    7. TabFX - Tab browsing Enhancements

    8. Viamatic foXpose - Click on the icon in the status bar to view all the browser windows with a single click.

    9. Gogle Advaced Operations Toolbar - A toolbar providing a shortcut to Google advanced operations.

    10. Bumble Search - Complet Search Solution - Google extensions, search bar, keywood highlighting, web page cross polination + more.

    11. DeviantArt: Koh33 Extension - Simple browsing of the DeviantArt forums.

Will add any more extensions I place into my Firefox. Looking forward to seeing others listed.

    1. Adblock - Allows you to enter regular expressions to block ads based on wildcards. Can really clean up some pages.

    2. Flashgot - Used to send download requests to external download mangers.

    3. AIOS (all-in-one sidebar) - Puts a sidebar on edge of your window you can use for the DOM inspector, viewing page source, extension manager, download manager, and lots of other stuff.

Forecastfox--I love seeing the weather three days out without watching tv, since I don't watch tv anyway

FlashGot--for downloading all items or items with selected extensions (e.g.: all PDFs) --which I only use politely

Nuke Anything Enhanced--Allows hiding of almost anything via context menu--I use this on flashing ads. I don't object to ads per se, but something flashing at the corner of my eyes slows down my reading and makes me feel like charging money for my time! I also use this to eliminate ink-wasting ads if I just want to do a quick print of the page and get on with things.

Bookmark Backup--extra, extra protection, even though...I direct it to the second hard drive

PDF Download--Allows me to choose to directly download PDFs rather than opening directly into another window.

FoxyTunes--controls any media player from Firefox, including foobar 2000.

Translate Page--option in Tools menu to, uh-hu, translate

IE View--I usually don't pay much attention to websites that don't use the industry standards, but I have a wonderful Canon printer that will let me select portions of webpages to print that, darn it, only has a toolbar function in IE. So I view in IE when I want to print. I use this less since I found Nuke Anything Enhanced.

CuteMenus 2--iconifies menus and popups with XP skin. Faster to see and select the pretty picture!

Bookmark All--bookmarks all opening tabs. Very nice for quick saves when I have 20 gazillion windows open and something comes up where I have to change tasks.

Calculator--maybe not essential, but fun, like having a Swiss army knife even though you have three or four dozen knives and corkscrews in the drawer

gTranslate--more fun, "let's see, what would that word be in..."

    Remove Cookies for Site--nice.

QuickNote--note taking extension "with advanced features". You can use as a sidebar, send text to it. Automatically attaches the URL. Obviously has a "stay on top" feature.

Scrapbook--I've not used this much because almost as soon as I got it, I found this site: www.netsnippets.com. This is really great. Everything is stored in its original format. Net Snippets is an excellent information manager that works with Firefox as well as IE, Netscape, etc. Very rare. Also most, or maybe all (?) store the information in a proprietary format which would require you to keep their software if you want to reaccess your research. There are three versions, including the free version which I am currently using. The top end model is great for academic research. Even with the free version, which has a very smoothly integrated Firefox function, you can use the www.esnips.com for uploading research while away frrom the home

Oh, I forgot antipagination and NoScript. I didn't see anyone mention NoScript, maybe it's a hassle authorizing the Java sometimes, but I think it's safer while surfing. And of course I have permanent authorization for Major Geeks!

I like StumbleUpon too. That one's on a second "Profile" that I set up, for more fun stuff. I wasn't sure if I would destablize something by putting on a large number. Bambo with 40 extensions has inspired me!

Thanks for the topic. There are some really nice choices here.

    Fasterfox
    Self-explanatory

    BBCodeXtra
Adds BBCode/HTML/XHTML commands to the context menu

    SiteAdvisor
Self-explanatory. (Hmmm, think I heard about that from around here somewhere)

    Adblock Plus 0.6.04
Which, I swithed from using Filterset-G to: http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeoa83f/firefox/adblock_filter_list.htm
Imported filters from here are much faster for me than Filterset-G for loading pages via dial-up and do an excellent job.

Good thread I think most of mine have been covered but here are a couple of extras:

Image Zoom 0.2.2 for the slightly older surfers and lets you magnify images on a web page pretty handy

SpoofStick 1.06 sounds smutty I know but "Browser extension that displays the actual domains of websites as they are visited, regardless of what is shown in the browser's URL address bar." Helps detect fake websites!
earlier versions of Firefox can get it from the extensions page but compatability with v1.5 means you have to source from this site:

Possibly a silly question but does having copious extensions impair speed when surfing??????

For anyone else that may be interested...even though this thread gets a little silly there are other posts within it explaining how the plugin works and what my experience with it was, including screen shots. If you don't want to register to beta test there is another link for download in post #25.:)

No number of extensions does not matter. You must separate extensions into categories or at least know which one are actively manipulating page content, ie. Adblock. Another could be those fiddling with tabs/GUI like Tab Mix. They can slow down, cause memory leaks or cause FF to leak etc. Conflicts between extensions also normal so those xx you have must be able to work together. Chosing right extension for the job is important, ie. Tab Mix is better than 10 smaller Tab thingys. New Adblock 0.6 is clearly faster for me, and most others I guess, and seems to have lowered level of used ram by FF as well. No strange build up anymore. So bye to old version. If you go crazy Mozilla Update it can go wrong, investigate and perhaps look troublemakers up at Mozillazine and you will be fine with many extensions. Slower FF load time perhaps and more ram use but nothing is for for free. Autoupdate is a good feature, see changelog of almost every extension. Not static and bugs do get killed. Linkification (for the lazy) at least used to be a known troublemaker but works ok here, just checked it yesterday. However also latest update has "Fixed memory issues" in changelog. Goes on an on https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=190&application=firefox

How do you meassure speed anyway? Adblock will most likely slow down any web benchmark, even the new fast version. But in real life browsing it will speed up ad infected page (many hits) more than any no Adblock browser can ever do. So relative. On a page with no hits it will be slower, just overhead. May be a matter of cpu power. Or getting used to slow down - like new Adblock reminded me old was slow. When I used that I was mainly annoyed by the sometimes strange ram-use, now I can see difference - not major but definitely noticable.

Btw, http://adblock.free.fr/optimize/ can optimze "simple" adblock lists. I use Mr. G list http://www.pierceive.com/ but have deleted min. 1/3 - a general list not mine. Check his whitelist even if you dont use his aggressive blocklist, import what is relevant - in there for a reason. "@@majorgeeks.com" seems to be missing, not all like adblocking so better mention that ;) Should you notice slowdowns with his list try default of old Adblock Plus http://p2.forumforfree.com/suggestions-for-default-filters-vt7-adblockplus.html really takes out the worst, high hit procentage.

After reading about the Firefox browser in PC World magazine I decided to try it. I was pleased to see so many extensions available. I do some web designing and when I saw the Firebug extension I decided to try it. To my shagrin I wans't able download it. I clicked on the download button and and get the install feature. After clicking on install I immideatly get the window asking me to restart Firefox to complete the installation. I have tried to install it several times with the same results. I have searched for the Firebug file on my computer and it doesn't show up. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how do I correct this to get it to install?

OK... I did that and found it is indeed installed..... There are three buttons showing. "Options, Disable and Uninstall". The Options button is grayed out where the other two are functional. Now that I know it is installed... How do I find the program and use it. I don't see it in my "All Programs" listing.

  24. theefool

It is a function built into firefox itself. Not an added file in programs.

Simply, open firefox, then click Tools, you should then see "Firebug", below "addons" above "error console".

No problem. I'm happy you got everything worked out! I just wish I could give you more info, unfortunately, that extension doesn't work for my version of firefox. Since I'm using the nightly trunk builds. :( Though, I could mod the .xpi file manualy to get it to work, since the extension NTT (Nightly tester tools) doesn't support it. :(
