Would I be asking for a really bad experience if I simply installed Vista right over Win XP?

    Hi

You can upgrade from XP to Vista but there are some versions that cannot do an inplace upgrade, XP Home is fine for all Vista versions to upgrade, but if you have XP Pro then this is different, a table to show you the options http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradepaths.mspx

Personally I would suggest a full clean install as you will be left possibly with some issues, mainly releating to installed software and maybe the odd driver, and many old legacy files if you upgrade.

If Hard Drive space is a plenty then to have the best of both worlds, why not partition the drive or add a new HD ( if this PC is a desktop ) and dual boot both?

That is a good idea. I really do need to look up again how to partition a HD. It has been so long since I have done that, or even something so basic as making a boot disk, or a low level reformat I have forgotten what to do. Will look on this site and see if there is a super basic refresher.
