I have a old dell inspiron 1525 laptop which suddenly stopped connecting wirelessly to the internet when I was on a long session on the net. It connects to the netgear router but just not to the internet. It says local access only. I tried a cable to the router but still local access only. 2 other desktops continue to connect wirelessly to the net via the router. I have tried updating the driver for the dell wireless 1395 WLAN mini card but no use. Any suggestions? Thanks,

If it were only wireless not working, I'd think it might be a hardware problem but since you can't connect even wired, it has to be something in the network setup.
What version of Windows? Do you have more than one browser? If so, is this true for all browsers or just a particular browser?
You also need to mention the browser(s) as well as the version of browser(s).

Windows Vista Home premium Vn 6.0
    Browsers which I use:
    Internet Explorer 7 Vn 7.0.6000.16982
    Firefox Vn 19.0.2
    Google Chrome Vn 26.1.1410.43m

It is the same with all browsers, no internet access.
    Any ideas?

Open a command window (Start > type cmd > Enter), and at the prompt type ipconfig /all > Enter. Right click in the cmd window and click Select All. In your reply here you can then use Paste (or Ctrl V) to put the results into your post.

OK, thanks for that. Everything in your network config looks ok as far as I can see, with the possible exception of the DNS servers where only your router's address is given, 192.168.0.1. Normally you would have two addresses here.

Can I ask you please to prepare exactly the same report on one of the other wireless computers where internet access is working?

I now realise that I was wrong to say these other 2 computers were connecting wirelessly. The Mac has a cable which connects to the wireless ethernet bridge to the netgear router. The PC connects via the electricity circuit and cable directly into the router. Here is ipconfig /all on the PC until I work how to get the same info off the MAC?

Your settings are good. I'd like to try a ping test next. Open a command window again and type ping bbc.co.uk > Enter

Let us know whether you get four results or whether they all time out.

Tried the ping test on both laptop and PC.
Laptop, no joy. Response was "Ping request could not find host bbc.co.uk. Please check the name and try again."

    PC: Got 4 results

Not looking good but let's just be sure about your local connection. Try ping 192.168.0.1

The laptop's wireless adapter has failed Annie. You could plug another one in to a spare USB port, they are cheap enough, or use a cable if that's practical, maybe using another mains adapter?

Just re-read your original post where you say it doesn't work with a cable either. Would you like to try the last ping test again but using a cable? You may have to enable the Ethernet adapter first in Network and Sharing.

Try flushing DNS. In a command window, type:

    Code:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    Then hit Enter.

Success!. Everything is working - laptop as well- when I turned everything off including the router and all computers and then on again. I think I got so caught up in all the possibilities I ignored doing the obvious properly. Peace in our time! Thanks to all and sorry for wasting your time.
