When I start up my pc I can see a little icon that looks like a couple of monitors in my system tray. & when I roll the mouse over it the icon says "Local Area Connection>>>Limited Or No Connectivity".

Now keep in mind I just got my internet for the first time. I never even had this icon appear in my system tray, until I got my internet and found out that I had to enable the network interface on my motherboard through the bios. That is when I started seeing this icon. Although before I actually hooked up the ethernet cable the icon had an "X", saying that a cable was unplugged. I obviously know what that means. Though when I hooked up the ethernet cable and plugged it in the back, the icon started saying "Local Area Connection>>>Limited Or No Connectivity".

I can use the internet using the shorcut I have on my desktop for the broadband network connection I made manually with the help of my internet company customer service rep over the phone. Although now when I do and at all times I see two of those monitor icons in my sys tray. One has an exclamation mark that says "Local Area Connection>>>Limited Or No Connectivity", and the other is the network internet connection I have working fine.

The rep from my internet company said he could'nt help me anymore because he said this is an o/s issue. How do I correct this problem and take this away from my sys tray? He claimed that this is a common issue. I dunno I just want it away and gone. If you need to know what is listed in my network connections, or there properties let me know. The rep over the phone told me microsoft has some sort of thing that fixes it. I dunno please help!

    Thank You

What kind of firewall do you have? Disable you firewall then go to the Limited or No Connectivity icon, click Disable, then Enable it again and see what happens

I have the windows firewall. Sorry I did'nt quite catch what you had said. I apologize. So do you mean:

    1. Disable the windows firewall, go into the network connections and disable the connection that says "Limited or no connectivity", and than enable the firewall again?

    2. Or to disable the windows firewall, go into the network connections and disable the connection that says "Limited or no connectivity", and than enable the same connection I disabled?

    Thank You

damn you reply fast. I'll let you know how it goes. Do I need to restart or something?

& what exactly does this do?

    Anyways I'm trying it now.

    Thanx

I disabled my firewall, After I enabled it again, the sys tray the icon "status" said "aquiring network address". Than a small yellow bubble message popped up from the same sys tray icon and said "You have limited or no connectivity, you might not be able to access the internet or some resources. This problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. It said "click here for more details". I did that and it said "To restart the connection and establish full connectivity click repair".

I clicked repair. & it said that it was trying to "renew my ip address". It failed to do so.

It said "If repair does not restore connectivity, the problem might be with the network, not with this computer. Contact the person who manages your network."

I told my internet company about this issue and there response is in the first post on this thread. They told me something about how my ip address changes all the time. And that if possible I should use a "dynamic ip". I don't know what the heck they are talking about. I know that this issue has something to do with the fact that I cannot use the windows program "netmeeting". I am trying to take control over my sisters pc in my her country to install some progams through "netmeeting". But I can't even get a call from her through that program. I know this has to be part of the problem. Darn how can I fix this thing?

All they told me was to try and get a dynamic ip. I never heard him say anything about static ip. I'm gonna call them and ask about that tho

I've had much the same problem for months. On a desktop that worked without a hitch previously (my internet modem connects via an ethernet port), it began claiming lack of network connectivity every time the power is turned on. I go through a silly ritual of disabling the ethernet connection and re-enabling it every time, and then it works fine until the next power on.

No one, internet service provider, hardware vendor etc. has a clue how to fix it, each blaming the other of course. Trying to involve M$ is utterly hopeless as anyone who's tried it knows. I've had "specialists" who can't even get pertinent information from their own company wasting days of everyone's time in the past.

One thing it has uncovered is the M$ secret WGA "phone home on every boot" fiasco. (though Windows Genuine Advantage silliness began much more recently and is not the cause). There are upwards of 20 packets that were not transmitted reported by the network dialog, with a renewed attempt at intervals, and when I put a network capture program on, you can clearly see it trying to call M$.

I suspect this has something to do with which services are enabled when the system boots, and that the act of initializing the ethernet connection properly starts the offending service, but boot does not. To trace this is unnecessarily awkward because the services dialog takes more than one screen and there's no convenient print or dump routine available. More important, services are a hodge podge of different routines with descriptions that are incomplete and misleading. Essentially M$ doesn't want us to know what they've done for fear someone will be able to duplicate their bloated code and compete with them.

I've designed complex electronic equipment and software systems for many years and I know what clean design is, which is why I am not complimentary of what Bill and the gang have done.

If anyone has solved this issue, I'd be interested to hear how.

    sure i solved it

go in the network connections, and click on the lan one. right click on it to go to properties. and choose "do not tell me if this has limited or no connectivity"

    i fixed mine

Thanks, but I am not so lucky!

What happens when I disable notification is there is no icon in the task bar and the network connection is not initialised as before.

It probably is in that tangled mess of "services" and I'll have to tediously go through them, rebooting endless times until I find the culprit (or that a non started service is not the culprit).

On a higher level, M$ should have added some non interfering, meaningful intellegence to the services spaghetti so that this kind of thing is self correcting. I've designed lots of complex systems that would have been a nightmare if done their way, but were rock solid and reliable because I designed in a self aware, self correcting manner. (And no, the result was not bloated, it was efficient and compact!)

Heaven help us if the same minimum to get by, half awake bungling is in Vista that is even more complex and convoluted than XP!
