I think my problem might have been caused by running Gomez Peer Zone software (not P2P file sharing).
After a few hours would get low memory errors and not enough storage to process operation and would have to close everything down and reboot.

After a few days was unable to run Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, or Windows Explorer. Would get The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application. Would have to click OK twice.

Eventually, task manager wouldn't open either. Mozilla FireFox always worked ok.

Installed Mcafee trial and uninstalled Avast, SpyBot, Sunbelt firewall, and Lavasoft Adaware and now all my programs run. Uninstalling Avast seemed to allow my programs to work.

    Please find attached log files.

I look forward to seeing your recommendations.

    Thanks in advance.

Not seeing any malware: Let's just do this.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: Search Helper - {6EBF7485-159F-4bff-A14F-B9E3AAC4465B} - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {78875F5C-A685-4405-8DC5-D48DC65452B0} - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    • O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    • O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Delete this file if it exists.
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\0073931341516010mcinst.exe

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi,

Thanks for taking the time for doing that for me.

I've done what you suggested and am now going through the other steps.

I've gone for the Comodo suite. Have uninstalled windows defender which doesn't appear very effective. Have uninstalled Mcafee which appears to have a useless firewall, along with all the firewalls I've used over the years,ie zonealarm, kerio, sunbelt.

I'm going to reinstall spybot with no teatimer.

I'm going through all the recommendations step by step.

    Thanks again.

One question with cccleaner. Is it safe to let it fix all the problems it finds with the registry?

    Best Wishes

One other question I forgot, would you use comodo's dns or leave it as your isp's when installing it?

Personally I would not bother using it, but you will be prompted whether you wish to back up first before you make changes.
I don't use Comodo products so I wouldn't know which was better. You can ask about this in the software forum. :)
