I'm looking for a 1TB SATA hard drive to put into my old computer for storage. I planned on a 2 TB WD drive however My friend told me older computers have a hard with with Drives over 1 TB and AF(Advanced Format) The only WD I can find without AF is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136313

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00069442#c00069442_doc is the motherboard.

Any suggestions for a 1 TB 7200 RPM drive without AF for around $70-80 bucks?

I was looking at some Samsung 1TB drives but unsure if they use AF. Samsung's website doesn't say so.

I run CentOS 5 Linux on it using LVM with 2 drives if that helps.

I've used quite a few Seagate drives (they are my drive of choice). I'm using a 500gb Barracuda drive now with an older ASUS board (P4P800) with no issues. I've not used their 1TB drives, but have not heard anything negative about them.

I checked out this drive: http://www.directron.com/st31000528as.html and I can't find anything that says it is an Advanced Format drive . . . seems like a good deal.

I've done a lot of business with this outfit - they are based in Texas.

One thing to be aware of - this drive can run at 3.0GB or 1.5GB data transfer speed. While intel chipsets auto-adjust the speed to what the board can support, most Via and SiS chipsets can't, so there is a jumper cap provided that hard-sets the speed. I'd imagine your board, being older, is just 1.5GB. If not set, the drive will not function properly with Via or SiS chipsets.

If you can get a WD10EADS they are not AF but the WD10EARS is. There are some brand new WD10EADS drives on ebay if you are OK with that sort of thing.
