Im trying to fix the GF sisters computer. They have some 81 background processes running and only 1 application (moozilla). Any specific programs that you recommend to remove/stop from running in the 'processes' tree? And any that can stop certian programs from starting at startup?

Click Start>Run and type 'msconfig' without the quotes. Click on the Start Up tab for a list of programs that run when the desktop loads upon booting. Simply check or uncheck as needed. Follow this link to read about XP services that can be safely disabled:

The site requires free registration to download the .pdf file for viewing w/ Adobe Reader 5.0 (or later). Also try using FileMon or AutoRuns to check out and disable processes..... check the Processes section right here at 'The Geeks' for good downloads. I think AutoRuns is available there (it's free and a GREAT tool !!) Good luck!
