lost internet connection on Windows 7

I did some searching and reading before posting this but did not find the answers to my problem, although it does seem to be common.

I have a Linksys wifi router from a motorola modem. I have troubles in the past but have tinkered and gotten the connections back up. However this time I'm on day 2 of clicking around and need some help.

My laptop, through which I am typing, is connected to my network and online. My wife's eMachine shows that it is connected to my network, but no internet access. I don't believe any settings were changed, as she is not technical enough to do anything more than social networking, ie. Facebook.

I've checked Device manager and did not see any conflicts. I checked the Advanced tab of Internet OPtions and all but two of the boxes are checked the same of both laptops. The two not the same were near the bottom in security section, SSL and TLS of wife's laptop are not checked.

Of course I've shut down and restarted the modem and router and laptop a couple times, no help.

Nor can I get to the internet through a ethernet connection, which I have been able to do before.

I've run the ipconfig/all on both laptops also. The only thing I noticed different there was that my wife's laptop has nothing in the Default Gateway, it's just blank.

I'd show you but I can't copy paste from command prompt (on either computer for some reason).
I suspect you may want to see this information so tell me why I can't copy and paste this info and we can get started. Otherwise I'll have to printscreen an image.

    TIA,
    klwdesigns

You can copy from a command prompt by clicking the very upper left hand corner (where File would normally be) and choose edit, then select all. Then click the top corner again and again select edit. Then choose copy. Paste it into notepad.

    thanks Tim.

okay, so if anyone can read this and my above post and helpme figure out what happened to our internet connection on my wife's laptop, that would be much appreciated.

You need to add the same gateway as on the other computer that does connect.

  5. klwdesigns

    I was wondering that.

I don't remember the steps to do that. It's Windows 7.
    Could you refresh my memory?

Not using Win7, but if it is similar to vista, go to the control panel, Network and Sharing. Manage network connections, right click your connection ( either wireless or wired ). Choose properties. Click on TCP/IPv4 then hit properties. You should have Obtain IP address and DNS server address automatically.

Also, make sure you do not have a proxy server setting:
    Change Proxy Settings.

  7. klwdesigns

    klwdesigns Private E-2

I went; control panel, Network and Internet, manage wireless networks, right click on my network (which says automatically connect), properties. But then I only have three check boxes to choose from which are; connect automatrically (checked), connect to a preffered, or connect even if SSID not broadcasting its name (which it is).

Thanks for trying though Tim. Hopefully somebody else will read through the post.

Windows 7 has a different way to access the IP settings, now more complicated but detailed by MS here

If I'm not mistaken, Win7 won't let you enter just the gateway and not the rest of the IP settings.

Also, there must be another difference between the computer that works and the one that doesn't. The computer that has access, it isn't in that IP range, is it? The IPv4 can't be 169.254.x.x, the means no DHCP server was found to issue an IP. Can you post the settings from the computer that is working? Just need the section for the adapter that is connected for this one for the moment.

    Take a gander handygal.
I'll re-read your post a couple more times digital, as I'm not sure where you wanted me to right click. And you're setting things that are over my experience level.

I followed the steps on handygal's link and the IPv4 settings are both on automatic, as are the IPv6.

I also figured out where digital wanted me to righy click. But I didn't go that far, as I'm not sure what that instruction does.

ok, let's get you in the right place for digital's instructions. I'm also not on win7 right now so let me know if you don't see what I'm talking about.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt -- but don't just click it, right click it and choose the option "run as administrator"

This will open up the black command prompt box and in that you can type the commands listed in bold. It will force the computer to clear and release the bad settings it has now. The computer has them set as preferred and wants to reconnect to them even when you reboot, and they aren't the right numbers.

okay, that's what I wanted to know, thanks.
I typed in the first line "netsh int ip reset reset.log" (w/o quotes of course), but the respons was command not found: int ip reset reset.log

should I proceed with the second operation?

Numbers look perfect now, but no connection.

Open the command prompt again. In the black box try a ping using
ping 4.2.2.2 (press enter) you should get 4 responses back. Then try another
ping google.com (enter) - again, 4 responses but this might be where it's sticking.

It doesn't say limited connectivity anymore, does it?

Basic as it sounds, now that you have the computer back to the correct IP, it's possible that the router needs rebooting again. I'd try one more round of reboots for the modem and router since the computer seems to be set correctly now.

Well I rebooted modem and router.
I disabled and then enabled the network card and then restarted laptop.
    I pinged 4.2.2.2, response was 100% loss.
I pinged Google.com, ping request could not find host google.com.

The laptop is still conected to my network but still does not have internet.

I even reset the laptop to it's settings before the last windows update.

    What else can I do?

even though your laptop has internet, it still reads like the linksys router is not functioning correctly because neither of your laptops should have the dns server ip of 192.168.17.1

when properly running, the router should pass the ISP's dns server's ip addresses to each laptop's wireless adapter tcpip dns settings.

here's my wireless adapter tcpip entries that were provided by our router (see pic). The 66... numbers are from our isp which the router obtained and then passed them down to our computers.

You may want to perform a factory default reset of the router, access its settings via a web browser and then reconfigure it for wireless connectivity. *Important, you'll need to connect an ethernet cable from your laptop into one of the available ports on the router in order to access the router settings via a web browser.

next, power down the modem, router and both laptops. as prompted further above, power up the modem. wat for 1 minute, power up the router, wait for 1 minute and then power up both laptops.

The dns settings can be the actual servers from the isp or they can be programmed into the router and the router is shown in the DNS settings on the computer. It can also be an internal ip to the modem giving the DNS servers. All can be correct and since one works like this, no reason to change the working one, not likely needing to change the non-working one. In this case, the ping to 4.2.2.2 tests whether there is any access to the internet at all and bypasses the need for DNS servers. Since there was no response, there is a problem with access to the internet as a whole first.

klw, do you still show 192.168.2.102 as your IP address?

When it says it's connected to the network, it's only telling you that it's connected to your router which it probably is. Connection out of the router to the rest of the internet is blocked or misconfigured and i can think of very little reason why. When you rebooted the modem and router, was your working computer logged on? The only thing coming to mind now is that something is configured to allow only XX number of connections, maybe just one. Also, did we try connecting the emachine to the modem directly?

  20. theefool

    theefool Geekified

The above is a good suggestion on connecting the computer directly to the modem.

Another item would be to see if the problem computer can ping the router itself, then another computer.

I had an IT guy at school work on it. Turns out that Webroot was the problem. I uninstalled and then reinstalled and seems to be fine now.
