Low Resource Antivirus and firewall?

I am looking for an antivirus and a firewall... either together or seperate... that take up a little amount of resources. Most of the ones that I have tried so far have slowed down my computer a considerable amount.

So I come to you guys, the experts. What antivirus and firewall, either together or seperate, have good security and detection rates... yet, do not bog down my computer resources?

First just a general comment, each protection application that you install (antispyware, antivirus, and firewall) will have a significant effect on PC performance. In some cases the choice you may make for anyone of these could make it seem as though it has a smaller effect, however, this could also mean that the application is not as powerful as the other one that impacts your performance more. This same effect can be seen in using any scanning tool. Some tools run much faster and use fewer resources than the others, but that can also mean they don't scan in as much detail and that they miss more problems or cannot even remove them.
