major win issue

Hi all,

Have a nasty problem, but don't quite know where to start.

I have a pc with ME on it, offie and IE5..

Last night IE5 stopped behaving correctly, and tonight I am trying to sort it out. There seem to be several problems, and I am not sure if it is a WIN err or something more sinister.

Symptoms I have.

IE wont launch
Start button wont open
Win explorer starts, but will not display any fiels - although the numbe of files in the dir are listed....
When trying to launch IE, there is a warning that says "Your current security settings prohibit activex controls on this page" (thin that's right')

Any help really appreciated.

Well first of all your MAIN issue is your Operating System, Windows ME. What has probably happend because of it being totally unstable. It has moslikely deleted some system files therefore crashing your whole system. So basically probably the only way to fix it is to Reinstall Windows ME.

 

Sell Windows ME on Ebay and buy Windows XP. You can save $20 to $40 on an OEM Windows XP on Ebay. Just be carefull, if it is an OEM and used it will not work for you.

If you don't like those options consider these:
how hot or humid can your computer's enviornment get?
How much dust can accumulate in it's enviornment?
What I'm getting at there is data corruption even though it's not likely.

Did you recently install any new components or do something different before the problem occured?

 

Well, what an comments.. should this be a geeks network? and not some new highteck shait forum??? What an comments from people .. buy an WinXP.. lol, what's good in WinXP? Hell you could of as well said get a linux?

I know the second one is Windows 98 SE update forum but well.. There's some nice information on rest of the forum for the Windows ME side... About what you mentioned try updating everything up and if you got an .NET Framework installed recheck it.. got here one WinME box it was acting same way that yours there I removed and completly reinstalled .NET framework 1.1-2.0 and well not it's working. Also get the IE5.5 and install it the IE6 sp1 might be too harsh if you are low on resources..

 

I appreciate ME is most likely the problem.

I posted on the Malware area thinking some kind of hijack...but, I started getting suspicious that it might be ME.

Starting in safe mode let the file list/icons/details become visible.

I could see and launch some things, but outlook, ie5 - no show.

So, today, we will copy the hd to a sever and then re-install ME. THe machine is not capable of running XP - but thanks for the ebay tips for future ref... Rather than throwing $$ at the machine this late in its life, slurping it might be the go.

Ho Hum...what would we do in our spare time without windows!

If you have Windows 98 I would suggest you install that instead. While ME might have a little more drivers, it's not much, and the OS itself is actually one of the worse Windows OS ever created. It can be unstable and have problems, a sketchy OS at best. I've worked with Winows 95, 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP.

We bit the bullet. Threw a truckload of ram at the box and installed XP.

All is well - or should I say all is as good as XP gets
