Let's say someone... let's call him.. uhm.. me :p wanted to build a case from scratch... Is there some sort of material that is best for the case and what about blowholes?

Metals always a good start.. if you've got the tools to work with it. You can make a case out of nearly anything. I knew of someone once who made their cases out of kitchen cabinets!

    what about them?

alot of cases that are built from scratch are usually made from wood or acrylic, because of the tools necessary to do the job. but that doesn't mean you can't make yours out of metal...probably aluminum would be my best bet.

Myself I would get a simple case from a shop, rip its guts out (like the mobo tray, drive cage) and then build a clear perspex/acrylic case around it. Thats probably a good place to start :)

Blowholes... just get a holecutter and drill a hole in the side. Its really that easy! :D

If you have some decent tools, you could always find a piece of non-functioning hardware that is rather large and make a project out of converting THAT to a PC. I've actually thought a lot about a project like this and wiil do it one day. Being a complete audio nut case (no pun intended), I want to convert a piece of audio equipment (ex. a reciever, older cd player... or maybe one of those old, all-in-ones with the 8-track.. seems like a good place for a cd-rom). I just think audio equipment is sexy.

    Have fun!

You could always try somthing like this :
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=35727

Get a cheap old non-functioning DVD player or somthing, take out its guts and put a PC in it. Mind you if you wanted a full ATX motherboard in it you'd have to find somthing big (a really old Laser Disc player might do the job, plenty of space to mount drives, but they are kinda expensive, maybe an old home cinema decoder?)

One day I'm gunna make a really kick-ass stealth mod machine, maybe a HCPC.

If you still want to make your own case from scratch, i suggest getting a 3D CAD program to do it with, plan it all out and work out what you need and what size to get it. That way you can go to the shop and get it all cut for you (maybe even get it laser cut if youre feeling rich)

I agree its pretty rocking ;) Would definatley be my style If i were to make a HTPC, but I dont have the cash to make such a specialised machine. I think I would also customise it more so its a little more obvious of whats inside.

Well this gives me a great idea for an old Betamax VCR I have in the shed. It hasn't worked for years ( many years in fact ;) ), only problem is the thing is huge. It's actually just like this one.

I don't know why I've kept it around for so long. hehe Could be a future project huh?

OMGosh... those things weigh a ton! My Mom used to have the VCR version of that same one. They cost a fortune, if I recall correctly (which is hysterical in retrospect). Anyway, you should be able to remove 90% of the guts of that thing and make it light as a feather. And I'm sure the thing is built solid as a rock. It would make a GREAT case! Now I gotta call Mom and see if she still has hers.. muahaha.. thanks for the idea!

Hehe yea man it's mostly made of wood. Actually the case is all wood, with the only metal parts being the mechanisms inside.

Hmm, might be a bit tight. If you felt brave you could mod the PSU so that the casing wouldnt get in the way of stuff, you could have a drive sticking out the top :p haha

I'm not sure if I would want that as my case lol. It looks like it would weigh a ton and it does look like its made entirely out of wood except for the top.

Eveyone here is hitting it right on the mark, Most custom built cases are wood or Plexi. Me I have made cases in wood (HELLRAISER MOD), Plaxi, Alum, Steel (big grounding issues with steel), fiberglass and so on... Unless you have access to a machine shop, I would stick with Wood or PlexiGlas...

I would love to see your Ideas when you are ready to share with the world...

Just checked out that link, damn that's really nice. And Mod Man's work is really good too. I like the pattern on that wooden case a lot.
