Hello, everybody. Since I am destined to do at least one clean install in the next little bit, since I'm just now reading through my XP book and finding stuff out AFTER the fact, can you tell me:

The next time I install XP, and download the Critical Updates (I learned my lesson guys), can I save those updates to disk first, in order to use them on a subsequent clean install? I get 26.4kb/s on my dial-up and would rather be surfing on this site.

    Thanks, everybody!

Yes, just download critiical updates to CD and install them before you go online to stop blaster etc.

You have to use the Microsoft Update Catalog to actually download the installer for the updates.... if you try to burn updates you've already installed on your computer to a CD, it's not going to work. You need to take certain options and steps through Microsoft's Update page. First you have to make the link appear (Microsoft hides it for some reason). So go to "Personalize Windows Updates". Then check off the box I have circled in the right window where it says "Display the link to Windows Update Catalog". After you've done that, a link will appear, where the arrow is pointing... there is where you can download the actual installer for the updates and burn those to CD.

    Thanks kodo, T-Rex.
From T-Rex's post, it looks like I could try to do this ahead of time. I'll look into it. There's still so much for me to learn about XP. I haven't even read through the book the first time yet, but i'll get there!

This thread is over 10 years old. You can't "slipstream" SP1 into Windows 7. Like Vista, you'd have to "Reverse Integrate" the Service Pack. It's quite a complicated and difficult process I checked into because I wanted to integrate SP2 into my Vista SP1 installation DVD. It's a lot easier (and safer) to just download the Service Pack installer from Microsoft and run it.
