Hello, I went through the stickied thread and followed the procedures for removing the malware on my computer. I was infected with Virtumonde and the recommended scanners show that I'm clean, but I do want to make doubly sure that my system is uninfected via expert analyses.

I first ran the VundoFix program, which was able to remove a lot of infected files but one in particular was difficult to remove. ComboFix was able to remove that last file and SpyBot no longer reports a Virtumonde infection (It had listed one before), AVG Anti-spyware comes up clean (except for a few tracking cookies that came from using the in-game EQ2 browser >_>) and NOD32 hasn't picked anything up on an in-depth scan at all today, though the active file monitor has been going off all day about new adware files being created by Explorer.exe. I haven't gotten an AMON notice since I ran the tools, so hopefully the problem is taken care of.

However, VundoFix removed a number of dlls, which causes Windows to generate errors upon startup. Is there any way I can replace these (presumably they're all legitimate but were infected) so that I can start Windows normally or am I doomed to a reformat?

Logs are attached except for AVG. For some reason, even after following the instructions I wasn't able to save a report under the Report tab. It said there were no reports generated. Is there something I could have missed? I attached the VundoFix log in its place since that contains additional things that were removed.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 12
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If you need the Sun Java Development kit you can get it here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {122CA62B-7917-42FA-9F52-A8635C761369} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqo.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2881A5C2-1C80-4086-8FC7-FAE0B531874B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyy.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: {f9ec729e-19f9-9d9a-0b34-27cc8018dceb} - {becd8108-cc72-43b0-a9d9-9f91e927ce9f} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qjhxuxub.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [1c96b0d8] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\lxdixutu.dll",b

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hello there and thank you for the quick reply.

I've been able to uninstall all of the Java programs from Add/Remove programs except one: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12

It's not listed on my Add/Remove programs list. I did find the folder it's in, C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_12 but I didn't want to delete it in case it would leave Registry clutter from not removing it properly. Is there some way I can uninstall it normally, or would simply deleting it be fine?

Just skip this one for now and complete the rest of the instructions. We can come back to this later if necessary.

Done. I haven't had any alerts from NOD32 or errors upon starting Windows since removal. Should I do anything else?

An interesting thing I noticed is that my monitor won't go into standby mode automatically through the power conservation mode now. I checked the setting and it's set to engage after 20 minutes still, but I went off to watch a movie earlier and came back to find my browser still displayed instead of a blank screen. I don't know if it's a result of the infection or if something else is keeping the computer active. I don't have any games running currently, so I have no idea what could be stopping it from going into standby mode.

Update: I found a process I never noticed before called PnkBstrA.exe, which after searching Google, it's apparently the PunkBuster program which is commonly used to stop cheaters in online games. However, I haven't installed any new games lately that actually use PunkBuster. After disabling it, I set my monitor standby to 1 minute and let it run, and this time it actually went into standby. I'll do some more testing to see if this process is causing the problem.

edit: Just found the edit button: I restarted so that PnkBstrA.exe would start again and let it run, and this time my system went into standby. Still, I've never seen this process running before and I had no idea if it was even on my computer.

It has been on your PC since you first posted your logs. I assumed you installed it or it came with games you used (maybe WoW). If you don't use it, you can do the below to remove the service.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to PnkBstrA
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    Then delete the below files:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pbsvc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\PnkBstrA.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\PnkBstrB.exe

If they will not delete then boot into safe mode and delete them.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
