Malaware Removal - Need Advice

I seem to have picked up something while surfing last night. My McAfee indicated a trojan was detected, so I ran a scan. McAfee didn't find anything, but AdAware did. The tool indicated the malware was removed, however when using Internet Explorer there is something strange going on.

First, after the cleaning process my google toolbar was gone. Also, my homepage was wiped out, and I was getting a blank page (could it be the about:blank ??).

When I use google and click on a link (after a search), a new window pops up with search results from a different search engine.

**EDIT: Furthermore, certain sites will not come up using the search engine ... for example, if I google "major geeks" the engine will indicate that no such site exists. Same thing happens when googling Spybot Search and Destroy.

Here's where I need help ... I am following the "cleaning" steps and the section regarding ComboFix states to "get help from an experienced user."

***EDIT 2: Sorry, am running Windows XP on the affected computer.

Can anyone here provide this assistance, or should I simply use the tool regardless?

    Help!!??!!

** EDIT: Should I stop and wait? BTW, I am posting from another (different) computer, so internet connectivity isn't (too much) of a problem.

    Update

    Sorry, not trying to bump.

I copied Spybot using my "good" computer and attempted to load it on the infected machine. No dice, it would not connect to the server. Not sure what happened.

Ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and it found a bunch of things, the 2 issues that jumped out at me were Hijack.Search and Trojan.Zlob.

I still have not run the other tools b/c of the instructions recommending "help from an experienced user."

I did load SmitFraudFix and ran that. It indicated that it found some files that required the use of a rootkit scanner, but I'm not sure what that is.

Smitfraudfix came up with the following error:

"C:\MG\Smitfraudfix\Smitfraudfix\Scan.DNS.vbs(67, 1)(null): The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

The system cannot find the file specified."

    Hi

With regards to Combofix, the warning is about deleting anything the log finds unless you consult an expert in the malware removal area, so my suggestion is to complete the guide below as set out and then once finished attach all the logs requested, then with the logs attached our malware removal experts here will be able to advise you on what files need removing.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

If a step doent work or you get errors, note the errors down and continue, at least we would need the MGTools logs as these give alot of info.

    Halo:
Thanks much. I ran through all of the steps. As I mentioned before, Spybot wouldn't load.

That aside, here are the log files. You will note that I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware twice. I did not follow the procedure on this step, accordingly I am a dork.

More logs in the next post.

    Thanks again for the help.

Edit: Am running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3 installed. Have McAfee Security Center installed. Am posting this from the "infected" machine which seems to be acting more normally.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

In the future please only attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file as requested and not the individual files from the C:\MGtools folder.

It appears that you malware has been removed. You just need to do the below.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Uninstall the below software:
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    chaslang:
    Thanks again for the assistance.

Downloaded and ran the windows messenger disable/removal tool.

Uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player - thanks for pointing that out, I missed it.

Copied registry edits and added to Registry. Received a success message, it must have worked.

    Ran Ccleaner.

Ran MGtools "GetLogs.bat" file, logfile is attached.

The computer seems to be acting fine, haven't noted any issues. One question, though ... McAfee "detects" the tools I downloaded (combofix, ccleaner, MGtools, etc.) for the cleanup as potential threats. Should I tell McAfee to trust the files, should I remove the cleanup tools, or should I uninstall McAfee and install something else?

They are no more of a potential threat then McAfee is. ;)

You can do this however we are going to be removing some items from the READ & RUN ME now since your logs are clean and we are finished.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Done deal.
