    The main symptom was that it changed a registry value involving exe files, causing the system to ask you to select a program to run the file when it was an exe an should run by itself. I ran all of the steps in the removal guide except for the MGtools, because i could not get it to work. It kept saying that the file was not a valid program or batch file.

    here are my logs:

    Are you able to now run exe file? If not, go here:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm --> scroll down to the ninth file fix.

    Try renaming C:\MGTools.exe to C:\MGTools.com and see if it will run. (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    If not, please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The red is merely informational.

    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    Please put ComboFix directly on your desktop as we instructed you, not here:
    "Running from: E:\ComboFix.exe"

    Hi, Thank you for the reply!
    I fixed the registry value that was causing the problems with the exe files before i ran any of the other scans, because I wasn't able to run the programs with out them. I tried renaming MGtools like you said, and I came up with the same problem. Heres a screenshot of what it said.
    [IMG]

    when i ran tried to run those commands from the command prompt, I got the same exact message, not being recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

    Did you disable all of your AV and AS software?

    Yes, the only anti virus on there was avast!, but i uninstalled that prior to running all of the scans. It wouldn't run any way, it gave me an error about improper configuration

    Click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt Window. In the command prompt Window, enter the below commands each followed by the enter key:

    ver > c:\ver.txt
    dir C:\MGtools > C:\flist.txt

    Now attach the C:\ver.txt and C:\flist.txt files here. Note there is a space after the dir and before the >.

    It appears after running MGtools.exe it doesnt properly extract. It creates the directory but there aren't any batch files in them. Here are ver.txt and flist.txt.

    Let's try downloading it again MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Now see if it will run.

    I found out what the problem was with MGtools, I was trying to run it from a flash drive. I was afraid of infecting other computers on the network because i didnt know what kind of virus it was, so i disconnected the network cable and was running programs off the flash drive. I attached the log.

    EDIT: I did copy over the combo fix and rootrepeal to the desktop like instructed. MGtools didn't have a specific instruction like that

    This looks more like a problem with your NIC card. You are not showing any IP address info.

    Also, did you set this:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
    Please see these instructions for resetting you proxy info:
    Change Proxy Settings.

    Now, let's remove a few things:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::
    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\171GU0ql1Hfe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\3436432066
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\3797935762
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\171GU0ql1Hfe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\3436432066
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\3797935762
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Templates\171GU0ql1Hfe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Templates\3436432066
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Templates\3797935762

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    You may need to post in the networking forum to try to work out your issue with having no internet connection. Do you have and ! or ? if you look in device manager?

    The reason i had no ip address was because I disconnected the computer from the network. I plugged it back in and ran the tests. Im not experiencing any problems so far, I just want to make sure I completely cleaned out all of the malware so it doesnt become reinfected

    Sorry for the delay. You need to run SAS and MBAM on each user account. You should also make most of them limited accounts. Having all users with Admin. privileges is a bad idea.

    Otherwise, your logs look clean.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
