    Hi-

    My Mother has managed to pick up a malware infection on her Windows XP PC. She said she saw a green "cmd" window and messages about cleaning her computer.

    I have followed the procedure for cleaning an XP machine, but if possible I would like someone to review the logs to make sure I got everything.

    I have attached the first 4 logs and will attach the MGTools log in a separate post.

    Thanks!

    While running MGTools, I got the following error:
    ---------------------------
    16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
    ---------------------------
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization.
    --------------------------------------

    Looks like the Malware disabled Norton? Anyway, I followed the instructions to delete that Registry key and re-ran the scan.

    I am attaching both logs in case you need them: "MGLogs with error.zip" is from the first scan, the one that the error occurred during; the other file is the logs from after I fixed the error.

    That's all of the logs.

    Thanks for your help.

    Let's just do this and then you can tell me what issues you may still have, if any.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\Deleter.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\FogCreekCopilotHooks.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\FogCreekCopilotHost.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\FogCreekCopilot.log
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\HostShell.exe

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\FCCDownloads
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\FCHost.settings
    C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Lind\Local Settings\Temp\FCHost.version

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi Tim-

    Thanks for your help.

    I am a bit reluctant to kill the Fog Creek Copilot stuff, as that is the program I am using to remote in to her computer to do the cleanup-- we are in different States. Killing that stuff means I will lose my view of her screen and be unable to go further without reconnecting; trying to talk her through anything over the phone other than *extremely" simple stuff like "click the big blue E then go to the www.copilot.com site and click 'GO'" is an exercise in frustration for both of us.

    Can you confirm that this is entirely necessary? I can state with confidence that the Copilot stuff was not there before I had her load it yesterday to allow me to help her, and it will be very difficult to proceed without it.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Sorry, I was not aware of that since it was in hiding in your temp folders. Forget my last fix and tell me what issues you are having. Otherwise, I am not seeing any malware remaining.

    Ah. Yes, Copilot is a great way to connect remotely to someone's computer to help them; it's Mac/PC cross-platform, can connect through firewalls/routers, is a minimal install, and is free on the weekends. During the week you can get 24 hours of connectivity for $5; and it's very difficult for someone to use it surreptitiously, as the person being helped has to OK the connection each time. Plus it's easy to get "basic" users connected; if they can open a browser and go to a website, they can do the installation.

    Sorry if that sounded like an ad; I have no connection to Fog Creek, I just really like the service! :)

    I actually was not experiencing any more issues; I just wanted someone more knowledgeable about Malware than I to look at the logs to see if there was anything more hiding anywhere.

    So I should be good to go to toggle System Restore and reboot? This is a Windows XP machine.

    Thanks again for your time.

    Thanks for the info. I have only used TeamViewer as yet.

    Yes, you can toggle system restore if you wish, but the scans did not find any of them to be a problem. If you want, just create a new restore point. Here is the rest of the cleanup instructions:

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    One other thing--she had Norton Anti-virus installed at one point, and the Malware seems to have turned it off. Is that something you can help me fix, or do I need to contact Symantec?

    Thanks.

    Have you tried to re-install it? I assume this is a paid for version?

    Yes, it's a paid-for version, and I can try re-installing it.

    I was kinda hoping you might know a shortcut, though! :-D

    Being that it seems the Malware disabled it, I thought you might know some Malware-Warrior-super-secret-incantation-type fix, like "Here, run this .REG file". ;-)

    Guess I'll have to do my own work!

    Oh, and thanks for the TeamViewer pointer. I'm always looking for good remote access app.

    I think I can take it from here.

    Thanks once more. I really appreciate what you guys do.

    You are very welcome. Sorry I don't have a script spell to fix Norton. :-D My normal fix for Norton is to uninstall it. LOL

    Heh. I kinda agree, but my Mom paid for it, so, until her subscription runs out...I'm stuck "supporting" it.:-o

    If you have any problems with Norton, do post in the software forums. :)
