    Hi,
I have followed chaslang's posting for Malware Removal and now I am posting my logs. I ran all the steps. I have Windows XP SP 3. I ran these instructions once before, about a month ago, and tested my browser (firefox 3.6.3). I did not post my logs at that time because it appeared my machine was fixed. However, the same virus has displaying itself (randomly redirects the browser when I click on a url link). So I have run the instructions again and now I am posting my logs.

    Thank you,
    Debby

    Hello, qwiitfun

Your definition databases for both SAS & MBAM are outdated. Please open each program, update the databases, and run new Quick Scans - attach the new logs in your next reply.

Please delete C:\Documents and Settings\Debby\My Documents\Downloads\MGtools(2).exe as it wasn't saved where instructed and is no longer needed.

This should not be on your desktop - store it elsewhere:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Debby\Desktop\WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe

Please look inside this folder and tell me what's in it. *Don't open anything in it.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\FxsTmp

    Step 1:
Please download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Step 2:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
*Consider updating Mozilla Firefox (3.6.3) to the current Mozilla Firefox 3 3.6.8 Final

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
    Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 6:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip and the TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt files to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    Thanks Dr.,
I am not experiencing the redirected url's or the memory consumption that I was seeing before. I have attached the logs created, after following your instructions.

There were no files in C:/WINDOWS/system32/FxsTmp (and I had turned on show hidden files).

    Thank you again.

We are close to wrapping up this thread, but note the below comments:

Your MBAM log shows that you didn't have it "fix" what it detected.
And I can't view your SASLog which wasn't saved with a .txt file extension.
*Please update the definitions for both, perform "Quick Scans", fix what they detect, and attach them with the fore-mentioned .txt file extension.

Using Windows Explorer - navigate to and delete:
    Please attach the below files:
    • updated SASLog.txt
    • updated MBAMLog.txt

    * Tell me how your machine is working!

Thank you. Scans run again and logs posted. I also deleted the c:\windows\system32\FxsTmp folder.

    You're welcome, qwiitfun

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
    Safe surfing! [IMG]
