    Chaslang-

Attached are my files from a malware removal.

This file is the only thing that remains: file://C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.html

It is on my background desktop. I have spotmau...

My question is...Could you look thorough my HijackThis! log and tell me what the actual file name is so that I can tell spotmau to shred it?

    Thanks.

malware removal PT 2 w/logs...files part 2...chaslang or anyone...help? thx

Here are the other files from the malware removal steps procedure.

Everything seems to be working just fine except for the blocked file on my desktop background. Does anyone know how to remove this?

    file://C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.html

    Thanks. :)

When I asked spotmau to remove, obviously it didn't recognize this file.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please remember to stay in one thread for your current problems. I merged your posts back into a single thread.

You need to install HijackThis into the correct folder now. You currently have it installed exactly where we specify not to install it.

I see Norton/Symantec Internet Security and NOD32 Antivirus installed. Did you skip step 3 of the READ ME or did one of these not uninstall properly?

You also need to attach the log from ShowNew that was requested in the READ ME.

You did not allow CounterSpy to fix the malware that was found. There is no sense in running the scans if you don't fix the problems they detect.

No! However let's try to simplify some of the work that will be involved in cleaning up after Norton.

Run this: Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: CNisExtBho Class - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: CNavExtBho Class - {A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD} - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: Norton Internet Security 2006 - {0B53EAC3-8D69-4b9e-9B19-A37C9A5676A7} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {C4069E3A-68F1-403E-B40E-20066696354B} - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O16 - DPF: {6A344D34-5231-452A-8A57-D064AC9B7862} (Symantec Download Manager) - https://webdl.symantec.com/activex/symdlmgr.cab
    O21 - SSODL: wmpenv - {0B404C66-97AE-4840-9C6E-89BABC41E886} - (no file)
    O21 - SSODL: wmpconf - {A687846F-C886-4729-B0AC-0A677246FA3E} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Then I will need new logs from the below so that we can see what is left after doing the above:
    • ShowNew
    • HijackThis

Re: malware removal PT 2 w/logs...files part 2...chaslang or anyone...help? thx

The below steps will take care of this automatically since we will be uninstalling CounterSpy.

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Collin Curtis\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

    Also delete the below file:
    C:\WINDOWS\duocore.dll

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    Mozilla Firefox (2.0)

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

    O21 - SSODL: wmpconf - {A687846F-C886-4729-B0AC-0A677246FA3E} - (no file)
    O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.
    1. ShowNew
    2. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    You're welcome.

The Symantec Service still did not go away. Let's use another approach.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Symantec Core LC
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.

Now check a NEW HJT log for the below service:

    O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe (file missing)

    Is it gone?

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
