Malware Removal Problem

We're using our computer mostly for web browsing. A week ago we started having problems when viewing video clips (eg Youtube) - It pauses to buffer every other second. Also, opening web pages with many graphic elements takes a long time. When scanning with Avast I got about 20 items (eg Bravix) that I moved to the chest and then emptied the chest. I then followed the Malware Removal Guide (Before I could press "scan" in Root Repeal I had to close a the dialog "Error - Invalid PE image found"), but it was still running slow when coming to doing those things. I ran SuperAntiSpyware again to check and "Dware.Vundo/Variant-MSFake" was the result. I got rid of that one but the machine is still slow.

Would be very very grateful if someone could give me some tip what to do. Have attached a few logs (unfortunately in Swedish but I guess you know what it's supposed to say in those cases the words aren't very similar).

Thanks a lot and Happy Holidays // Dave Hanner, Sweden

I am not seeing any malware in your logs.

    1. Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following bold folder:
    • c:\program\Delade filer\ParetoLogic

    2. Now run GMER as per these instructions-

GMER - running with a random name

    3. Now go to this link Using MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe using the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    4. Run the new MGTools.exe and attach the C:\Mglogs.zip into your next reply as well as the log from running GMER.

Thanks a lot for such a fast reply! Really impressive! I've now attached the logs you asked for. The two GMER logs correspond to hdd C and D respectively.

Best regards and thanks again!! // Dave

I believe SAS and MBAM dealt with what malware issues you had, from what I can see now your logs are clean. How is your computer behaving now? If you have any other problems surrounding viewing vid clips you will have to make a post in the software section.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Unfortunately it's still lagging a lot or even worse. However, I'll run those last steps now and get back to you after that..

Yes, and perhaps you can re scan now with avast! and see if it's still detecting anything or not. :)

When trying step nr 3 below, I get a dialog saying something like "C:\Documents and Settings\David\Desktop refers to a place which isn't available..." (I do have ComboFix.exe there) Am I getting something totally wrong maybe? :confused

    replace desktop with Skrivbord.

    "%userprofile%\Skrivbord\combofix" /u

    I'll do that...

Btw, when trying to uninstall HijackThis I get something that might be translated into "An error occurred when u tried to remove HijackThis 2.0.2. It might have been allready uninstalled". Well, I didn't remember me uninstalling that one but well well...

I do not feel too bright now....

When doing that ^^, I'll get into things leading to Combofix running again. Do I really want that? (I interrupted the scan but had to reinstall my internet connection afterwards)

I'll run avast before scurrying off to work now...

    Thanks again!! // Dave

Seems kind of promising regarding the malware: avast reported only "non-access" items in the Superantispyware quarantine. Nothing else. So I guess I'll move over to the software section now...

Thanks a lot!!! (for now I guess) ;) // Dave
