My computer has been sending e-mails on its own and I have been having problems opening downloaded programs. I assumed this is a virus or malware problem. PCTools antivirus finds no virus. I have been trying to use the malware removal quide on your website. I got to the section for Windows XP and downloaded the programs. I could not get Super anti-spyware to run even using the portable version loaded into a flash drive from a laptop. Then Malwarebytes would not run either. It tried to update and I got an error message that the data file could not be attached to the version I had. I also get a message that the file could not be saved because the digital signature could not be verified. I get this message on a lot of downloads. Is this a virus or a problem with my Windows program?

If one step does not work them move onto the next. Before I make any further suggestions, answer this:

Were you able to run the below?

    • Combofix?
    • MGTools?

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5AA2BA46-9913-4dc7-9620-69AB0FA17AE7} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CFB53429-F770-4A27-BC45-76BBBAB674D6} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {5AA2BA46-9913-4dc7-9620-69AB0FA17AE7} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code:

    :reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5AA2BA46-9913-4dc7-9620-69AB0FA17AE7}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{CFB53429-F770-4A27-BC45-76BBBAB674D6}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{5B4C3B43-49B6-42A7-A602-F7ACDCA0D409}]

    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieframe(2)(2).dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iertutil(2)(2).dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\urlmon(2)(2).dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32k(2)(2).sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wininet(2)(2).dll

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Please rename Combofix.exe to cfgtgt.com and try running it again in safe mode if normal mode is problematic.

    Run this.

GMER - running with a random name

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

I apologize for taking so long to respond, just got to this tonight. I have encountered the same type of problem. OTM would not run. Got the encountered and problem and needs to close message.SAS gave me the same"blocked because of invalid digital signature" message.TDS SKiller had an error reading the file while I was extracting the files from the zip folder. Combofix still said installation files were corrupt and to download a fresh copy. I was able to scan the combofix file for viruses in safe mode and found an "application.nir.cmd virus in it. I also scanned the safe mode files but did not detect anything else. I have attached the MGTools log file.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Use windows explorer to carefully delete these files exactly as they are shown with the (2)(2).dll extensions.
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieframe(2)(2).dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\iertutil(2)(2).dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\urlmon(2)(2).dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32k(2)(2).sys
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\wininet(2)(2).dll

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. See if you can save a log with it.

Try and run Malware Bytes Attach a log if you were able to run it.

Now try and run TDSSKiller and Combofix.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

have performed all operations and attached text. AVP did not close and appeared to stop but it did generate a log file as attached. Still couldn't run SAS for same reason but TDSSKiller and Combofix did run this time, logs attached.Malwarebytes source file corrupt and would not run. Will send second reply with MGTools log.Really appreciate you hanging in there with this.

The eset scanner would not start. It was blocked just like SAS because of digital signature verification

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Malware Bytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe Now rename the mbam.exe to m123.com and attempt to run it again.

Also you may have the same results but try this.

Run this: Running Kaspersky Online Scanner

malwarebytes was unsuccessful, same results. It updated then said the application data was not supported by the version on the computer, download newer version. the Kaspersky scanner requires Java which I have been unable to download. I tried again and it failed saying there was a corrupt installation file.

Are you getting this blocked because of invalid digital signature when trying to download or when trying to run?

For those error messages when trying to download, right click on Internet Explorer on your Desktop and choose/Properties/Advanced. Scroll down and check off "Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid".

For individual programs that are already downloaded and installed, you can try right clicking / properties / see if you don;t have a box for UnBlock.

I clicked allow software to run even if digital signature is invalid and re-attempted those programs that were blocked because of this. ESET ran into an unexpected error 2002 immediately after downloading the virus database. SAS just did nothing when I ran it and I still couldn't get Java to download because it said a file was corrupt.

This sounds more like a Windows issue. Possibly not having certain updates for Visual Basic, Visual C, or .NET Framework could cause problems like this with some programs. I suggest that when Kestrel gives you the all clean, that you then post in the software forum for further assistance with those issues.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I have performed all those operations and we'll see how things go. Thanks for all your help. If I still have problems I'll let you know.
