Malware removal

I've started the Read & Run Me First malware removal guide. I've attached the results for the counterspy scan, activescan, and runkeys. I've run bit defender several times, but the window doesn't stay open afterwards for me to be able to get a report.

I'm doing this Read & Run Me First malware removal guide as a first step to getting rid of j?vaw.exe, a program that keeps popping up every time I turn on my machine. It comes up on my Symantec Antivirus and I have to reboot everytime in order to delete it, but it never really deletes. Is this a good way to go about eventually getting rid of this? Also, once I've downloaded counterspy, is it recommended that I have it as part of the start up so that it is always on my system tray?

My machine is a hp pavilion ze4800 laptop. It has 768 MB of RAM and a mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP2800+ 2.12 GHz processor.

    More Questions:
How many processes is it normal to have running? In my Windows task manager, I have about 70 running. Also, the names of all the processes running are not very descriptive, is there an easy way to determine which processes should be running and which ones are potentially harmful that I should remove?

Please re-run counterspy and have it fix/quarantine everything that it finds!

Then please follow: How to view hidden, system files & folders!

    Download this file - Combofix.exe
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Attach the logs for:
    ShowNew
    ComboFix
    HJT

    Hi,

I have followed your procedure, here are my new logs. The fourth one is on the next post. Currently, Counterspy is part of my Startup; so it is always active. Should I keep it this way? Is it ok to delete old Couterspy reports? Finally, should I post my latest Counterspy report?

    Thanks

If you downloaded the trial version then you need to uninstall it ---> as we are done with it. You can attach a new log if it is finding anything other than cookies.
If you purchased it...then you can leave it running at start up though it may slow down your system.

If this still exists: C:\Documents and Settings\Hans\Application Data\BitTorrent DNA
    delete it!!

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

NOw attach new logs for :
    GetRunKeys
    HJT

Here are my new logs. I've also included one from counterspy. I keep finding porn dialer by Montorgueil. I delete it at the end of every counterspy scan, but it remains. I've also tried to open the folder C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MT, but access is denied. Should I keep the avenger, Spybot, combofix, and CCleaner programs on my machine?

    Thanks

When we are finished you can uninstall anything we had you download for the cleaning ...although CCLeaner and SpyBot are programs you may wish to keep.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

If after running this...that dialer file still exists on your computer:

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
Let me know how that goes...and if it still is there ..attach a ShowNew Log.

Hi, I ran avenger using the following script:

    Files to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MT\portale_porno.exe

but it did not find the file. The file traces found according to Couterspy are as follows:

    File Traces
    %DESKTOPDIRECTORY%\ portale_porno.exe
    %PROGRAM_FILES%\ Montorgueil\ portale_porno\ portale_porno.exe
    %WINDOWS%\ Temp\ MT\ portale_porno.exe

What is the MT folder for. Should I delete it or do I need some of its contents?

I've attached my latest avenger and counterspy logs.

    Happy Thanksgiving

I am not seeing those files in your logs .(you can always remove temp files) .but these have appeared:
I see that it is a streaming video program that is probably ok ..but do uninstall Viewpoint.
Why did you ignore all that Counterspy finds?
Run an online Bitdefender scan and attach that log please.

Here is my bit defender log. It didn't find anything. I ignored the counterspy finds because it wanted me to register and pay for a subscription in order to Take Action. I deleted the Viewpoint Media Player. MT is a folder in my TEMP folder with the path

    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MT

When I attempt to delete it, I get the error that access is denied or that it may currently be in use. I have no idea what may be using it. How can I find out?

Another question: I turned off a bunch of stuff in my msconfig menu so that they don't automatically start up when the machine is turned on. Some of the things are AIM 6, MSN messenger, quicktime, webcam software, Skype, Adobe reader speed launch, Google updater. However, if I ever open AIM 6 or MSN messenger, they automatically become part of my Startup menu. How do I avoid this?

The bitdefender scan was clean ....can you right click C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MT / properties / and does it have a security tab? If so, add your user and give it full permission.

    Otherwise:
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Again...attach that log.

As to Counterspy - uninstall it, as the trial period is over.
Install AVG-Antispyware and run it and attach that log.

You may wish to use a Startup Manager ---> not msconfig. Reset to normal mode and use the Startup manager.

Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Hi,

I was going through the procedure to finish malware removal when I noticed the folder MT which I posted about on November 14th has reappeared in the Avenger folder. Access is denied, I can not delete it, and when I put my mouse over it, it says it is an empty folder. I had previously removed it using avenger; the avenger log had said the removal was successful.

I assume you are referring to the avenger backup folder? If so it is safe.

    Hi,

Can I delete ATF-Cleaner.exe, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot Search&Destroy, Getrunkey, ShowNew, counterspy.exe, hijackthis_sfx.exe, and CCleaner? Would you recommend I hang on to any of these programs? Also, about this MT folder I previously asked about. I can't delete or move it. I previously removed it with avenger and the avenger log had reported a successful removal. Should I remove it again, or should I just let it remain? Is it always going to exist somewhere?

    I would keep :
    ATF-Cleaner.exe, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot Search&Destroy
All useful for cleaning and protection.

    Try :
    |MG| Unlocker 1.8.5
