Thanks for the great directions on scanning and removing. I have followed Steps 1-7 in the Read & Run Me sticky.

I have attached the logs from Bitdefender and HijackThis. I was not able to run Panda Active Scan. I attempted from both Safe and Normal Modes. All links to Panda Software did not work. I did do a Google Search to try to find other links but all failed.

Please review my logs to see if anything else needs to be cleaned.

    Thanks so much.

I forgot to add that when I went to disable System Restore, I found that it was never enabled and that I can not enable it. The error message states that a network administrator must make the changes. The compute is not on a network and I was logged on with an administrative account in XP.

Please give me any advice on this issue. Thanks

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Your hosts file has been hijack and it is blocking your from some sites.

Download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

Now try running the PandaActiveScan and attach the log if it works.

    Thanks.

Hoster and Panda Active Scan worked. Log is attached.

What should I do about the System Restore? How?

Do I need to run any of the scans or HJT again?

Thanks again. Your service is GREAT!!

Let's worry about System Restore after your malware has been removed.

Did you install this Bsafe Internet Control software yourself. It seems broken. See the below HJT line:
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'inetcntrl.dll' missing
If you did not install or do not need or want it, add the the list of items below to uninstall.

Look in Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the below if found:
    2Search
    BestPopUpKiller
    IMprocess
    IM Names
    SpyKiller
    Viewpoint Manager
    WhenU
    WhenUSave
    Zango

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
On the page that opens, scroll down to CWShredder Service ... right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    CWShredder Service
If you get any error messages, just ignore them and continue.

Now exit HJT and do not reboot if it asks you to do so. We will reboot later.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ltwob] C:\WINDOWS\system32\formatsys.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [serpe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\serbw.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMprocess] C:\Program Files\IM Names\IM-svr.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [ltwob] C:\WINDOWS\system32\formatsys.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [serpe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\serbw.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BestPopUpKiller] C:\Program Files\BestPopUpKiller\BestPopupKiller.exe /startup
    O16 - DPF: {3A7FE611-1994-4EF1-A09F-99456752289D} - http://install.wildtangent.com/ActiveLauncher/ActiveLauncher.cab
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: xmlmc - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\xmlmc.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Program Files\IM Names D<--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Zango Programs D<--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\SpyKiller D<--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\BestPopUpKiller D<--- the whole folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\Timothy Poindexter\Desktop\package_MARKETING27.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\formatsys.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\serbw.exe
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Thanks again.

I tried to run all your latest instructions. I was not able to do the following:

    1. These programs were not listed in the Add/Remove:
    2Search
    BestPopUpKiller
    IMprocess
    IM Names
    SpyKillerWhenU
    WhenUSave

    2. These folders were not found when trying to delete:
    C:\Program Files\Zango Programs D<--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\BestPopUpKiller D<--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\formatsys.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\serbw.exe

Otherwise this machine is running a lot faster and more predictable.

    Thanks

    HJT Log attached.

You did not answer my question and it is stil broken!!!
Is your version of SpySubtract a paid version or free trial version?

I apologize for not answering your question. I realized I forgot to then got distract, sorry for that.

I have reinstalled Bsafe but that does seem to have fixed that O10 line. Bsafe is an internet filter, pop-up blocker and firewall. I ran the HJT scan with the service off but got the same result.

    New HJT log attached.

I only have the free version of SpySubtract loaded.

    Thanks again.

Check to see if the inetcntrl.dll file actually is missing!

    Download LSP - Fix

    Run LSP-Fix.

Check the Box labeled "I know what I'm doing" and then click on the inetcntrl.dll file (in the “Keep” section) to select it.

Then, Select the >> button to move inetcntrl.dll into the Remove section.

Now, click the Finish Button. When the Repair Summary box appears, click OK.
If it is already in the Remove section, just click Finish.

    Uninstall SpySubtract!

    Is everything working OK now?

I ran the LSP Fix. It worked as the O10 line was missing from the HJT Log. However, when I restarted the computer, Bsafe issued a warning stating that a file was deleted by an unauthorized action. Bsafe restarted the computer and when HJT was run after this restart the O10 line is back. It seems that Bsafe intentionally causes that line to appear. Is this a problem? The computer seems to operate fine. HJT Log attached.

Just curious, what is wrong with SpySubtract? Is it a memory hog?

What can I do about the System Restore? or Should I do anything?

Thanks. I now need to go through this same sequence on the other two computers in the house.

    Thanks again.

That's okay! It's good that we checked. This means the file does exist but it is probably located where HijackThis cannot find it for some reason.

You only have the free trial version which does not have any useful functions that will really help you. And since you now have Windows Defender installed, you definitely do not need SpySubtract. And yes that would waste resources.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

  12. markdex

    markdex Private E-2

When I went to disable System Restore, I recieved the following error message:

"System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore contact your domain Administrator."

It appears that the System Restore has been disable all along. As it states, I can not enable it. This User is a computer administrator. This computer is not part of a domain.

    Can you help with this?

    Thanks.

This is not really a malware issue; however, take a look at the below links and see if you can get it working. Some of these tips only apply to Win XP Pro. I don't know what version you are using since it was never mentioned.

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/srpolicy.htm

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/re-enable_system_restore.htm

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=283073

Also I would like to check something out, please run the below procedure (it runs very fast) and attach the runkeys.txt log:

    Using GetRunKey

  14. markdex

    markdex Private E-2

I followed the steps in the first link which took care of the System Restore. It is now enabled. I ran the GetRunKey but it created a log that did not include any text. I attached it anyway.

    Thanks.

Well if you problems are resolved, we do not need the log but it sounds like you did not extract both files fro the GetRunKey.zip file into the same folder. Don't worry about it now since your problems appear to be fixed.
