I have completed the Read & Run First instructions. The symptoms I experienced seem to be gone but I'm not certain that my system is no longer infected. I'm hoping somebody can look at my logs and advise me about any further actions I should take.

I first noticed problems on 6/15 when I was browsing the internet and looking for a program to remove DRM from my protected iTunes .AAC files. My anti-virus (McAfee) program warned me that it had quarantined several trojans. Here is a summary of the log events I can find in McAfee and what I remember happening.

    6/15 17:35 - McAfee blocked a buffer overflow by WINDOWS\system32\services.exe at API KERNEL32.LoadLibraryA
    6/15 18:17 - McAfee removed several trojans during a real-time scan
6/15 18:51 - I intitiated a manual scan by McAfee which quarantined several trojans and rootkits
    6/15 20:18 - Blocked a buffer overflow by WINDOWS\system32\services.exe at API ADVAPI32.RegOpenKeyA
    6/15 20:20 - Blocked a buffer overflow by WINDOWS\system32\services.exe at API WS2_32.socket
6/15 20:22 - I initiated another manual scan by McAfee which quarantined more rootkits and trojans
6/16 01:23 - McAfee detected another trojan during real-time scan
6/16 02:00 - I intiated another manual scan which quarantined another rootkit
6/16 14:29 - My computer was pinged from several IP's in Europe
    6/16 17:19 - Pinged again
    6/16 20:04 - Pinged again
    6/16 21:50 - Pinged again
    6/16 23:39 - Pinged again
6/17 11:28 - McAfee blocked an outbound internet access attempt by a program called C:\WINDOWS\freddy46.exe.
6/17 sometime around noon - I noticed that my web browser wasn't working correctly and that my Folder Options and Registry Editor were both disabled. I found the Major Geeks site and began the Malware Removal procedure for Windows XP. Everything seems to be working fine now. BTW I'm running Windows XP SP3.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O9 - Extra button: ComcastHSI - {669B269B-0D4E-41FB-A3D8-FD67CA94F646} - http://www.comcast.net/ (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: Support - {8828075D-D097-4055-AA02-2DBFA9D85E8A} - http://www.comcastsupport.com/ (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: Help - {97809617-3937-4F84-B335-9BB05EF1A8D4} - http://online.comcast.net/help/ (file missing)

We don't recommend putting anything in the Trusted Zone unless absolutely necessary. So optional fix the below unless they are imperative.
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.adobe.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.wsj.com

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

chaslang, a sincere thanks to you and the MajorGeeks staff. You guys are the A-Team of malware removal! I can hear the theme song in my head now.

The two requested logs are attached. I haven't noticed any problems since I completed the 'Read & Run Me First' last week, but after reading all your instructions I figured I should post my logs and see if there was anything else I needed to do. Thank you very much for the reply and your expert advice. Please let me know if I should take any further action.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix and C:\QooBox folders from combofix (if it exists and note that you may need to substitute a different drive letter than C: if you have Windows installed on a different drive.)
      • Also delete the below two files that are left behind by ComboFix, some scanners falsely detect these as problems which they are not:
        • C:\WINDOWS\NirCmd.exe
        • C:\WINDOWS\PEV.exe
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
