Trying to hunt down cause of sound distortion that starts at windows xp load screen. Some forums have suggested possibly a file in windows prefetch and temp folders is causing this. Going by the date the problem started I'm looking at this fife in my temp folder-Perflib_Perfdata_304-Dat file. I am not familiar with these files or doing anything in system folders. Can someone tell me what this file does and the consequences of deleting it and other files from temp and prefetch. thank you for any replies.

I wouldn't advise deleting those or anything in the prefetch folder until you have had more advice. This does not sound like a malware issue, and I would suggest that you post about this in the software forum, however, if you do wish to totally rule out malware as being the cause you will have to follow these instructions:
