So i recently (today) began having all kinds of problems. The first thing i noticed was that web pages werent quite loading properly. there were weird variations in the layouts on pages that i always go to. Some things just wouldnt load at all. It was very random. I decided to download some spyware tools to see if i was infected. I just bought this laptop from a friend, so it didnt have any on it yet.
I tried to download spybot, adaware, hijack this, etc.
I could complete the download, but the programs wouldnt run. Ive recieved several error messages in my attempts, such as crc errors, digital signature errors, unknown errors, I/O errors etc.
Ive tried downloading repeatedly, tried safe mode, even tried several online virus scans which also would not run. Then i tried to use s different browser, but i could not install firefox either. I tried to restore the computer with system restore, but it did not solve anything.
I have no clue whats wrong and cant get any answers from software. I actually got HIJACKTHIS to run once, from a temp folder and have a log file from it. I hope it helps, cause its all i got. Let me know what you think, and if i should post the log file.

    Thanks

First I wonder why your friend sold this PC! Hmmmmm! Was it like this when you bought it.

    These
are more than likely not due to malware.

We prefer that the below steps be followed before a HijackThis log is posted. Also HJT must be installed properly. If you can get it to run from a temp folder it should also run from a proper folder

See if you can follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

I have already tried all that stuff. Like i said before, nothing worked at all.
The machine worked fine for over 2 weeks, without the slightest problem.
i cannot install hijack this properly. Ive tried saving it and it wont run when i do. Ive saved it in several locations, didnt work. I cant even copy it from the zip file to the harddrive.
The online scans did not work. They wouldnt run. Windows said that they were blocked due to unvarified digital signatures. I even tried to turn my privacy and securtity levels to nothing, but it still would not allow the scans to run.
I have downloaded every possible scan software worth downloading and none of them would install, giving me the errors i reported earlier.
Ive done everything i could think of next to reinstalling my OS. Im not trained in computers, but im fairly savvy for a self taught amatuer. Please let me know of anything i may have missed in my attempts. Again, the only hijackthis log i could obtain was from the temp folder, otherwise the software would not work.

No visible malware in your log!

    Does Windows Explorer run?
Can you run sfc /scannow from a command prompt?

explorer runs. And yes, i get error messages. The weird thing is, its a different message for each program i tried. The online scans give me digial signature verification problems, i think spybot gives me unknown error, adaware just stops and i get a generic windows must end this program error.
I think there were a few others too. I could go back through it all and get more specific if you think it would help. ( hey, im from jersey too)

Well, i cant properly run that program cause it asks for a windows disk that i dont have :(
So i guess i should wait til i find one to move on from here, unless you have something else to suggest.
Thanks for now, i'll be checking back here later this evening.

If it asks for the disk, it means there are necessary windows files missing. You need the disk and make sure it is one that matches the Service Pack level of your PC, which is SP2.

Thanks, i'll be trying to get a hold of that disk.
Im curious as to how i could be suddenly missing files. Seems kinda weird.
I'll let ya know what happens when i get the disk.

Don't know! Bad shutdown? Disk error? Power hit? Malware?

You may have more problems than sfc is going to fix!

True, but its a start right?
I ran chkdsk, that seems alright.
so im gonna work on repairing windows and maybe then i can at least get some anti spyware software to work.
If i reinstall windows on a Sharp laptop (which i believe is manufactured for sale in asia) would it work ok? or do ya think i'd be missing some important drivers?

Not sure! Do you mean WinXP? It has a better base collection of drivers than older OS's. This is better answered in the Software or Hardware Forums.
