max payne 1 no longer working?

recently i tried installing max payne 1 on my hp laptop (i had to reinstall windows xp on it) and now it seems max payne doesn't want to run on it, it has avast anti virus and comodo firewall (i tried it on my home built gaming pc which has windows vista and i downloaded the max payne sound fix and i ran it and it had issues finding the game files) and my vista machine has the same anti virus and firewall.
(Max payne also didn't run on my vista rig).

 

their all current on both my laptop and gaming pc (and my copy is a retail cd).

 

i'm resurrecting an old thread, i recenty reinstalled my old sound blaster x-fi extreme music sound card (it has great sound) and i tried to play max payne 1 with creative's alchemy program (i read on the web that some other players who had max payne audio issues in vista have luck usibg that program but it failed for me.

There was a patch you had to apply for XP if I remember correctly.
