McAfee running up HDD space

    Hi,

I was working on my mom's computer, trying to fix it up a bit, and first thing I did was run ccleaner.
Lo and behold, it cleaned off 12 gig, which was odd, because I had run ccleaner 2 weeks prior, and it wasn't even emptying the recycling bin this time.
I checked what it was deleting, and it was cleaning mainly from the c:\windows\Temp folder. It was cleaning 3 files, over and over (like 1.5 mb per file), the three files were: clean.dat, scan.dat, names.dat.
I think they have something to do with McAfee, but I can't uninstall McAfee, no matter how much I want to, because this is her work computer.
I left her computer to scan with Trend Micro Housecall, because I thought this might be a virus.
Does anyone know what is going on?
    Thanks guys.

Those are McAfee's files and do not need to be removed anyway. I'm not sure why McAfee is putting them there or why it is not cleaning them up if it was just being used while doing an update. They definitely should not be save in the temp folder if they are required during program use. You should check to see if the file dates change when an update is installed.

I thought I would take a snapshot of what files her computer had deleted during the clean. I pasted a few of them in this post.
I don't know why there would be 12 gigabytes of these files...
    Any ideas?

Also, she is in XP (service pack 3).

I did a Housecall scan over the weekend, but when she got in this morning, she refreshed the page and lost the scan results...
There havent been any new .dat files in her temp folder though, which I guess is good news, although bad news for trying to find out what is wrong.

Either way it was not an issue for the Malware Removal Forum since it is not malware. It was just McAfee. The probably cure would have been to uninstall McAfee, reboot, and reinstall.

I would just delete any other files that you see in the temp folder.

I'm not sure if its a virus or not, which is why i posted here.
She can't uninstall it, because work is very anal about these things.

I did not say leave it uninstalled. ;) Sometime it is necessary to uninstall software and reinstall to fix a problem. Anyway you don't need to uninstall if the temp files are filling up the PC anymore. Since this is a work PC, it is possible that they are doing updates via the network automatically and they have some issue where they are not cleaning up the temp files after each update.

the only problem is that the work is very stupid with computers.
We don't have a reinstall disk, and to get one could take weeks.
They have specific settings set up too, that we can't change.

Then if these files start collecting again, some one in the IT department needs to investigate their update distribution methods. ;)
