    Hi,

    I'm using XP Home Edition 2002 SP3, Pentium(R)4 CPU 2.40GHz
    2.41GHz, 760 MB RAM.

I had my hard drive reformatted more than a year ago. Everything
was running fine until recently I kept getting error like these -

The instruction at "Ox42f6d425" referenced memory at "0x0000008c".
The memory could not be "read". (At Help and Support)

The instruction at "0x7d6f388f" referenced memory at "0x00000068".
The memory could not be "read". (At System restore)

The instruction at "Ox4091d3b9" referenced memory at "0x0000008c".
The memory could not be "read". (When opening a downloaded software program)

I've tried to restore to an earlier date when the system was running okay but cannot do so. What is wrong, are some files missing?
Please help as I am not computer savvy!! Thanks.

    Hi CathL,:wave

Try seeing how much free Hard drive space you have, goto your C:\ drive and right mouse click and go properties - at the bottom of the options which appear...and see how much free space is available less than a couple of hundred MB and you might have an issue.

Also there maybe something in your tempoary files causing a bit of a stink, try going through the start menu > accessories > tools > disk cleanup clean up tempoary files dont forget to clear out your internet temp files - but be aware your last visited pages and internet history (recently visited pages) may dissappear so you might want to bookmark your favourite sites first.

Sounds a bit funny with the system restore what happens when you try this...same issue or it just doesnt help / work?

Wont be online again till Monday but plenty of helpful peeps here to help you through the weekend...L8r:cool

    Hi necro61

Thanks for helping. I have 149 GB in C Drive and have 102 free space. I
did clean up my files but still the same problem remained.

Today I upgraded IE7 to IE8 and fortunately no more errors like before. Hooray!!!

The thing I noticed is you have 760mb of RAM. You should have 768mb of RAM. Although I've never heard of it causing that error before, it may well be. I just had the same error in my laptop. It was showing 999mb of RAM whereas it should have been showing 1024mb. Also it was snail slow which is why I went looking for issues. I replaced the chips and everything was fine again. :) You might only have to replace one chip as it may only be the one.

How slow is your computer running??

Oh p.s. I tried running memtest on my old chips, one at a time and with both in, left it for 8 passes, showed no errors and my computer was still running as slow as hell (with both in).

Drizzles, some computers share RAM. I suspect that's where the other 8MB is. My computers do not show the full RAM when the onboard chip uses RAM.

I know this but I'm only telling you what I found from my personal experience.

    Hey good news CathL,

Must have been something to do with I.E or an associated file, glad its sorted, would be interesting to know what the issue was in the first place....

But as long as your up and running create a restore point. Plenty of info online if your ot sure how to do this, or try hitting F1 on the desktop and type in system restore.

Also you might want to check out how to back-up you internet address book and favourites, there will be info online for your version of I.E on how to do this, if you have a flash drive or cd writer etc.. you may want to back these up to one of these just incase of future issues.

    G luck:cool:wave

    Hi,

I've definitely created a restore point. I've also downloaded the free
version of Advanced System Care and my computer is running much
    faster now.

    Thanks guys.
