Memory/cpu Clocking

I have 2 sticks of 8gb each DDR3, both rated at 1866 MHz. I also have a AMD dual core, 64 bit capable processor, 3.90 GHz, running in a Gigabyte F2A75M-D3H motherboard.

When I checked the BIOS settings, the default memory frequency is 1680. So, I reset the clocking speed to 1959 by increasing the multiplier from 16.00 to 18.66.

I also increased the CPU from 3.90 to 4.09 GHz by changing from default multipier 100.00 to 105.00. At the same time, I disabled Core Performance Boost.

Did I do the right thing?

If you need more info, please ask as I can give whatever details you need to make a wise assessment.

My concern about what you did is the increase in heat output with the faster clock speeds. Is your rig capable of handling it?

It must be, because the fan speed has not increased. It still runs on low speed most of the time.

    You're not monitoring your temperatures?

OK I just installed "Core Temp".

    Tj.Max = 80 c

    CPU#0=5 c

    What are these 2 values?

CPU values look wrong, uninstall CoreTemp and try HWiNFO(x64).

I use it sensors only but checkout MA's video for other display methods.

    80 C is hot!

That's MUCH better, thank you. Huge amount of information presented! And it all makes sense. I do not know what tctl means, although I looked it up but can't interpret where the value falls on the "arbitrary scale".

    CPU (tctl)....................current 4.8......................max 27.3..........average 6.7

    CPU package..............current 53.9......................max 76.3..........average 55.6

Here are some numbers for you to peruse. Tell me what you think of my overclock or anything else. Sorry, you might have to zoom. I'll crop next time:

No clue what CPU (tctl) is, probably AMD specific, doesn't look bad though. Tj.Max should be something like the safe thermal limit/headroom, with recent Intels, that would be ~7C below throttling point, so with a max of 76.3 (presumably under benchmarking stress?), that should also be okay.

The motherboard temps, #3, 4 and 5 are odd, if they're real values from various other sensors, it might indicate some heat pooling/lack of airflow, I'd like to see more data (native size, rather than compressed, easier on the eyes).

See the blue double arrow, bottom left? That expands the view so you can see 2-3 panes = more data, easier to get the big picture of the machine, overall airflow, etc.

Ill put cpu and memory clocks back to default
Again........I only use this machine for web browsing.
    Please advise.
    Would this be helpful?

I'd prefer to see readable and fuller specced screenshots from HWiNFO before making a call but if you think a reset to defaults would be a good option for collecting baseline data, I'm happy with that.

If you're only web browsing, I see little point in using extra wattage and creating more heat by overclocking, your CPU is plenty for that at stock speeds - unless the GPU side is struggling on video playback, in which case a memory overclock should help alleviate that.

Bear in mind that I don't consider myself an overclocker, my own rigs use Xeon and i3, neither of which can really be overclocked and I've not overclocked an AMD since I had an Athlon Mobile in a desktop...
