I've run memtest86 on a Compaq Presario notebook PC and it shows 502 MB of memory. The computer has 512MB. memtest86 reported no errors after I let it run for about an hour. Is a figure showing the amount of memory less than the physical memory installed normal or not? Show I see 512MB in memtest86?

I started memtest96 on my desktop system, which also has 512MB and memtest86 shows 512MB of memory. So, I'm still wondering whether the 502MB being reported on the notebook PC indicates some defect. I restarted memtest86 on the notebook PC again and will let it run overnight.

I recall having the same issues on an old LT. I'd searched the net and figured it was the on board video, borrowing RAM.

Sorry for the yahoo link - I know there have to be better info/links available:-o But I've seen anything from 8MB to a lot more being used/borrowed.

By the way I post this, being on tenter hooks - knowing your vast experience and knowledge.

    Cheers..
