messed up xp install

Have my kid's xp pro install disk from school; didn't know it was 64 bit. Long story short: it wouldn't work on my old PC, and when I realized what a mistake I'd made, I wanted to roll back to win98, which had actually been working fine.

I had to manually start the xp uninstall, using this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312569/ , which went fine until I looked up when Win98 finally started.

Now there aren't any programs included in My Computer and the start menu doesn't work, among other things. Avast worked until I turned it off, and Outlook Express and IE were okay. But where's everything else and why isn't anything in any of the folders? When I click on them they say "%THISDIRNAME%"

And shouldn't the start menu work when I click on it? Nothing! Can't see a list of programs. Can't see Settings. Where is everything?

Feeling very, very stupid. It's not a big deal to me to lose a little data, but I hate to lose this computer because of such a stupid mistake. And I can't find my old win98 cd to save my life.
