Is the MP3 player dead? Microsoft quietly kills off its Zune range - as iPod takes a back seat

In some of the least surprising news to hit the world of technology this year, Microsoft quietly killed off its unpopular Zune music player - at least the physical models.

The brand will 'live on' in Windows Phones, which Microsoft hopes will 'replace' the standalone players. In a final, cruel flourish, Microsoft revealed that orders already placed for Zune MP3 players 'will be fulfilled.'

My feeling is that Zune was yet another grossly overpriced Microsoft offering.

Aside from the fact that every phone on the market (even $10 prepaid ones) can store and play .mp3 files using a microSD/SDHC card, the Zune did not offer any advantages over a generic .mp3 player selling for 70% - 80% less.
