I've installed Windows Anti-Spyware on my computer and also the Beta for Windows One-Care. Both made by microsoft. How would you guys rate this up against other free products.

P.S. Windows Anti-Spyware is free as long as you have a legit version of windows and Windows One-Care is only free in the beta stages(don't know how long its gonna last).

Of all the antispyware applications I've tried, MS Antispyware is the only one that has real-time protection. That gets a big thumbs up from me...

Spybot S&D has real time protection (Teatimer) but it is a bit more limited.

A lot of programs have real time protection, including Spybot, the paid version of AdAware, Spyware Doctor etc and specialised programs like Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard.

As far as Micro$$oft AntiSpyware, it was a good program when it was owned by Giant.

Then Micro$$oft bought it and removed support for Windows 98 and NT when it used to work fine with them.

Also, and more disturbingly, Claria was listed as Spyware by Giant.

Micro$$oft bought Claria, then when they bought AntiSpyware from Giant, Claria is no longer detected and a threat.

Funny about that. (And yes I've read Micro$$oft's crappy explanation)

But no one sued Giant when they proclaimed a certain program was spyware. Until MS came about.

Where did Giant deserve to be sued?

Also, Giant doesn't have a buggy operating system like Micro$$oft, and they supported Windows 9x and NT.

Anyway, getting off topic so this will be my last reply.

One Care I cannot comment on as I dont have that installed, but MS Antispyware I have had installed since it became available as a MS product, and I can say that its very good has a few other options over the competition but I would still have a 2nd antispyware product installed as a 2nd opinion Ad-Aware is good.

Have you tried simply things like uninstalling and reinstalling?

Make sure it's completely gone before you reinstall.

No, the best things in the world are free. I'm just telling everyone out there with illegal copies of windows that they can't get what is basically free.

Dude, we could help you if you would answer the questions. I'll go one better!

This thread will show you how to set up excellent defences against BOTH spyware AND viruses..for free.

I don't get why you're upset, though! If you had answered whether you wanted antivirus or antispyware, you would've got PAGES of answers!

    Hope that helped!

I'm sorry, but if you can't ask a proper question, you won't get a proper answer. I couldn't even get an answer as to which specific software reccomendation you wanted.

Well, couldn't you run both ops if you got a virtual pc product like Microsoft Virtual PC or VMWare? I haven't used them yet, but I'm considering one or the other because I'd like to put another os on my machine to wean myself off of Microsoft. Has anyone here used a virtual pc product or have an opinion about them? :)

BTW thanks, Insomniac, for the Claria info. More reason I won't use Microsoft AntiSpyware for the long term. Would anyone care to go into info on "for-pay" spyware protection? I know Fertyop opened the topic on the free stuff, but I'm looking at other solutions as well right now.

Right now, I use Microsoft AntiSpyware for my resident antispyware program, SpywareBlaster's immunizing function, Ad-aware and Spybot. I've not tried Spybot's Teatimer function because I've heard it slows processing time, is that the only reason some of you guys don't use it?

I've been looking at Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, SpySweeper, Pest Patrol, and Panda Platinum. Any suggestions among these, or are there others you recommend?

I don't know if I would do better to get an integrated program, with antivirus and firewall, or if it works just as well or better to make independent selections. Since this field changes so rapidly, since the quality of products relative to others changes, I haven't really been looking at integrated programs.

    How was that a wisecrack?
You said what if AVG gives me troubles, which you didn't mention.
Then you said, fine, I'll use SpywareBlaster.
I was just stating the fact that they do two very different things.
    AVG - AntiVirus
    SpywareBlaster - Spyware
    That's all :)

I used to use AVG and it worked better than norton but the real-time scanning for avg and the anti-virus program were seperate so by the time AVG found the virus and scanning the area the virus was in the virus had already worked its magic. I found that AVG found every virus that went onto my computer and norton didn't find anything. So paying isn't always the best option. I might go back to AVG if they have improved since then which was a year or 2 back.

    That makes no sense whatsoever?

I means that AVG detected the virus but did nothing to stop it. I had to go into start menu and open the anti-virus and scan the area the virus was in. Thats what it meant. The part of AVG that would detect the virus wouldn't do squat to stop it.
