Microsoft Security Essentials would not start

I noticed that Microsoft Security Essentials had stopped working on my mother's laptop so I started the cleanup process today.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware would not start at all. When I tried to run it as Admin nothing happens.

I have attached the logs for the other scans, I think they all were successful.

    Thank you!

Rerun Hitman Pro and allow it to fix all those items it found. Those are what are blocking many things on the PC from running. Then immediately reboot the PC. After reboot, run a new scan with Hitman Pro and attach the new log.

See if Malwarebytes will run now. Also see if Microsoft Security Essentials works.

Rerun RogueKiller and run a scan. After it finishes the scan, select the Registry tab and then select any of the below that exist and then click the Delete button.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

After reboot, run a new scan with RogueKiller and save a log as in original instructions and attach the new log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new Hitman log
    • the new RogueKiller log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Good Morning!

I have followed your instructions exactly. I ran Hitman and fixed the items, then rebooted and ran a new scan, log is attached.

Then I checked to see if Malwarebytes would run, it did. I ran a scan with it following the instructions in the Malwarebytes page, and attached a copy of the logs to this post.

Then I checked to see if Microsoft Security Essentials would start and it started up, I didn't use it though.

I then ran RougeKiller and deleted the items you listed. Rebooted and ran a new scan, log attached.

Then I ran the getlogs.bat and attached the log to this post.

Thank you very much for your help with this so far.

A few notes after using the laptop for a few minutes.

There is a problem that I'm having that I didn't mention in the first post because I wasn't sure if it was a separate issue but it hasn't seemed to have gone away. Windows Update is telling me that there is 1 important update to install. It is the update to Internet Explorer 9, when Windows Update tries to do the update it comes back with error code 9C48, Windows encountered and unknown error. Now I have done some digging around, and Internet Explorer 9 appears to have already been installed on the laptop. It opens up when I click on the shortcut but there is no way for me to uninstall it. When I open up Programs and Features and to the Uninstall programs menu Internet Explorer is not showing up as an installed program. I opened up CCleaner and it doesn't show up in there as well to be uninstalled.

That is something that I think needs to be resolved before I can consider the computer clean. The reason I started using the laptop is because my mom got a new printer and I was going to install the drivers/feature programs for it but that installation will not work at the moment and I think it has something to do with the other problems that are happening.

I hope I didn't waste any time by not including this in the OP but things need to be taken one step at a time I think and sometimes multiple things are resolved all at once. This time since things haven't changed after the first run of the programs I thought they might deserve some closer looking at.

Thanks for all of your help!

This is not malware problem. It is a problem with Windows and you will most likely have to work this in the Software Forum. However what browser are you trying to use in order to get your updates?

Also let's finish some additional minor tweaks.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://search.coupons.com/
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {ebd898f8-fcf6-4694-bc3b-eabc7271eeb1} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: TBSB07898 - {FCBCCB87-9224-4B8D-B117-F56D924BEB18} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {8660E5B3-6C41-44DE-8503-98D99BBECD41} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Okay, I followed the steps for Hijack this. There weren't any instructions for a log or anything else, hijack this ran smoothly, and I think the files were removed from the computer.

About Windows Update, I haven't been using a browser to try to update, I was using the standalone Windows Update program from the start menu.

    Thanks for your help

Try a manual update by using Internet Explorer to go to Microsoft Update and see what happens.

Or see if you can just use the below to reinstall ( not sure it will let you ):

    Microsoft Internet Explorer 9

Also possibly using System Restore to go back to a point in time wher IE9 worked may be of use. I did not put removing restore points in my final instructions below for just this reason.

Other than those suggestions, I suggest that you post in the Software Forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Go back to step 4 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
