Microsoft Word spell check

does anyone know why i do not have a dont have a spell check working for me. I go to tools, options and the spelling/grammer tab is fuzzed out and is unclickable, can anyone help.

 

what version of office?

quick search reveals this.. but need your version to be sure

im using microsoft 2000 and im running office 2000 programs

 

the link u sent me says for windowns 97, the syptoms are the same yet i cant access the hkey local machine file

 

Make sure your language is set to what ever language you use.. still looking for more info..

 

any luck finding anything?

 

do a search for Custom.Dic

if it's not found make one in this location using notepad

C:\Documents and Settings\[your user account name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof\custom.dic

if it is found, rename it to custom.old and make a new file using notepad.

Note, when using notepad, the file extension is TXT. You must change the file extension to DIC and accept the changes.

 

should i have just saved it in that location as a blank file?

Here is another possible solution you might try,

Close Word. Start > Run and type regedit

Hit your Enter key. Browse to the appropriate path:

For Word 97:
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\8.0\word

For Word 2000:
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\9.0\word

For Word XP:
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\10.0\word

Once you have found the path, right click the Word folder, hit Rename and rename it to OldWord. Hit Enter, and then exit the Registry Editor; and then relaunch Word.
