I just received this report from an old custom-built desktop I'm working on:
    http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=F01C8F5E31D926C3

I've looked inside and sure enough, it has 2x 168-pin slots and 2x 184-pins. Currently there is nothing in the 184-pin slots, but there are two 512MBs in the 168-pins, running at the lightning speed of 133MHz. The poor computer has Windows 7 installed and it is just way, way over it's head.

Am I right in thinking that although their are 2 different DIMM slot types, that it will only be able to use 168 OR 184? Also would 2 GB really enough to run Win 7 for light usage?

The best way to confirm that would be the motherboard manual,if you dont have it, post the model or run Everest or similar software and post the model number, and we can try to locate it on the net for ya.

I got bored while waiting for dinner to get ready and googled your motherboard... here's the specs.

As you can see, you have two DDR slots (184 pins per module) and two SDR slots (what you're using right now). If you can, try to get your hands on the manual and on 184-pin DDR memory, since it will be both cheaper and faster. You will need the manual because 98% of the time you need to move a memory voltage jumper on a hybrid board like this, and the manual will tell you where that jumper is and where to move it to.

Also, with 2GB you should be able to run Win7 for light usage if you turn off Aero and a lot of other eye candy, and choose your security apps carefully. The Software forum here has a lot of very knowledgeable regulars who can help you with that. :)

    EDIT:
I found a memory FAQ for your motherboard! :) Here! Pictures of slots and jumper and everything. :)

Thank you both for your fast replies.

Special thanks for Mimsy - everything I needed to know, the perfect answer!

FWIW, I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit OS on 2 gigs RAM with no problems. You might like to run FreeRam XP Pro on your machine.
It works perfectly on my laptop. Wouldn't be without it, despite the fact that W7 is supposed to take care of RAM management.

Go to : FreeRAM XP Pro 1.52
    at http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1670

Also check out ReadyBoost at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost for a cheaper way to boost RAM performance.
I haven't used any ram boost assistance on my laptop. You might like it. :)

    Also search on http://www.google.com/search?q=ram+boost+%22windows+7%22&hl=en&num=10&lr=&ft=i&cr=&safe=images

Keep us informed on how you go, and the results.;)
That way, we all learn. :-D
