My fan regularly changes tone/speed and I don't believe happened in the past.
Maybe I have only noticed this as I currently have the side cover off the box, as I have just replaced the mobo, could this be a cause for old mobo failing?

CPU, if thats the fan your talking about, fans often change speed. it depends how you set it up. I have for example three fan systems. One is on full pelt all the time. One I set the speed on and it stays at that. One looks at the cpu temperature and changes its speed accordingly. which system are you running?

HOWEVER, if you have any doubts about your fan and think it is failing, replace it. They are cheaper than cpu's.

It's the fan mounted over CPU.
I don't think it did this before.
Any suggestions of what settings to look up, and what settings I need?
Do you need further info. from me?

Yeah, I need to know if you have any software such as speed fan that is automatically adjusting its speed, and what mb headers you have the fan plugged into.

I have no fan software installed. Fan is installed on CPU FAN mb headers as last mobo and as instructed in new instructions.
New mobo is ASRock P4VM890 with adt-400 PSU.
As i sit here it is changing speeds and noise and causing a little vibration, and I am only using outlook and firefox.

well a cursory glance at the manual for your mobo seems to suggest that the mobo header is unexpectedly just a power line for the fan, and that there is, as there is on most mobos, a monitor for the cpu fan speeds which you can access in BIOS.

So if you have not added in software or specified pre-existing software to change the cpu fan speed as part of power arrrangement etc then its new fan time. If you want to check how the speed of the fan changes to see if it is erratic first, then try speed fan.

As i know nothing of fans in PCs i attach 2 recent screeshots for comment...

Please advise problems spotted in the above.....
Also, please advise type, style, quantity of fans you suggest are required to improve....thanks.

With recient hot weather in UK, your room temp is likely to be higher than normal as your CPY temp is at 58-60c in which the CPU fan will speed up to not just cool but try stop the CPU from throttling back ( trottling is where the CPU in Intel CPUs will lower its MHZ so to help the CPU cool ), note in your pictures the two temps and fans speeds, your CPU hits 60c and your fan speed tripples to cool the processor, normal occurance.

how many fans do you have in your case apart from the CPU and PSU fans? best options if case allows is to have a fan in lower front of case drawing in air and one in the back inline with CPU to expel air out back of case, you can also tidy up the cables to allow better airflow around the case as messy cables create warm/hot dead air pockets which heat up the case.

    I only have 1 x CPU fan.
Is 58-60c OK for CPU temp, if not what is ideal?
I think i will replace the fan due to the noises/vibrations I am hearing during these speed changes, there must be fouling it! Any recommendations....

My old computer (which is a gateway computer) but when it got to winter the fan was quite.
I now have a new hp computer.

Yup thermaltake volcano. I always use cpu fans from this range, not just because of the copper heatsink etc but because they are quiet, provide very good cooling, smart design well thought out. I could go on...

Right, I was never advised to use a thermal compound between CPU and heatsink, when i replaced my mobo i had used existing components: CPU, RAM & heatsingk/fan.
I have now applied the compound, and noise and vibration has gone, EXCELLENT.
Although speedfan shows temp2 at ~59C when CPU is being utilised, and ~49C when little CPU usage, i attach screenshot of link:

Is this OK, any other ideas?

Reminds me of a true story. My Dad loves his computer, but he is definately not a geek. Almost clueless is the term that comes to mind.

His computer started making noise from the power supply fan. I didn't have spares handy, so I told him as long as it was makeing noise he could use it, but shut it down if it stopped. I would repair it next time I was up there.

So it stops making noise (in other words, the PS fan quit), and he kept using it. It fried the power supply, the motherboard, and the hard drive. I asked him why he kept using it after it went quiet, and he told me he thought it had fixed itself. ARRRGGGG!!!

If I had got there in time I would have replaced the fan, no big deal, but he turned it into a very expensive repair (aka, upgrade).

Moral of the story, replacing the fan is no big deal, but when it is time it is a much cheaper option.

    Replace that fan.

Ta Bill, think I will change the CPU fan for all the cost a new one is.

New stock fan added, bought from ebay for £6 (inc. p&p).
Fan nows works, eliminated changing tone and vibration.
Mobo now about 41 C, but fan is loud and its speed is ~5200 rpm.
