I was given a pc by my father, everything but the monitor. I had an old monitor which I was going to use with it. Anyway when turned on the Dell startup screen comes on then the Windows logo, then as Windows starts to load it goes staticky. If I hook up it up to my other monitor its fine. I would think that if it were a bad monitor then I would not get the crisp clean images at the beginning. Any thoughts or suggestions?

as i understood your monitor is very old, and if you worry about your health it's worth to buy a new monitor.

What do you mean if I worry about my health?

Most likely he/she was refering to the Elecro Magnetic Radiation ( gamma ) given out by older CRTs vs the newer CRTs and more so LCDs which give out very little to none.

If the post screens are clear, then I would be tempted to delete the monitor driver from Device Manager and re-boot so the OS ( which is it BTW? ) can re-install the monitor driver.

Ah, I work in IT for GE and we run into this all the time with old monitors. In our case, it means the monitor is too old to display higher resolutions, and so as soon as the Windows load logo goes away, which is at a lower res, and Windows or it's login prompts comes up, the screen turns to complete worthless hash.

Try pressing F8 as the PC loads to get to the boot menu for Windows, then select VGA Mode. This should fix it. Then you can set the resolution to 800x600 and you should be good to go.

my apologises for answering so late, but i was talking about this thing. old minotors have a small refresh rate, low brightness and other thing which become bad as times goes by. So because of this you have to peer at the screen and you eyes get tired and go bad.

I know I'm off topic here.. but have to approach this question, loosely connected to the question!

I get the tired and for me dry eyes from staring at screens every day ( LCDs so no flicker either... but the concentration I need in my work does tire my eyes out ) but dont get the "go bad" bit... my eyes have not changed in loss of sight for years due to using CRTs and LCDs, how you mean go bad?

Yes continual and concentration use of PC monitors will give you eye strain, but no medical evidence hints at it worsening your eyesight, or making any existing condition worse, eye drops do help in reducing the eye strain and dryness ( also look away from screen on occasion and blink )... been continually using them for over a month and have noted my eyes in the morning dont look daemon like, for headaches you need to take regular breaks from the screen, your being told you most likely dont have the correct sitting position and have been on PC too long.

BTW.. not having a dig at you at all, just wondering what you mean on Go Bad... this area has an interest to me professionally.

    Thanks Sidecutter and everyone else,

I did as sidecutter said and presto it is running right. I did not even have to reset the resolution.

Glad I could help, Crimsn. I only suggest changing the resolution afterwards because the default resolution for VGA mode is 640x480, which is pretty hard to work with, especially in an OS that can display as many useful extras as XP can. Stepping up to 800x600 is definately recommended, and your monitor should handle it fine.
