Monitor fading

    So I've noticed more frequently as of late than ever that when I watch a movie on my computer no matter if it's a youtube video or a dvd that randomly my monitor would go dark... it wouldn't go completely black but lets just say it gets dark enough... is it the monitor dying on me or what ?
    it currently gets plugged into the regular monitor slot not hdmi and not dvi
