Monitor turns off while windows is loading

I just installed a fresh windows (xp64 sp2) and after doing a few updates from microsoft (.net framework specifically), my monitor turns off as windows is loading. The windows sound comes on but the monitor does not. It works fine in safe mode. The problem would not resolve if I tried switching out the monitors. However, when I switched out the video card the monitor would start turning on. Since I installed the new windows on a new hard disk, I put in the old one and it would experience the same problem while loading the old system.
Just today I bought a new PSU (better model than the old one). I appreciate any suggestions.
